May 2024 Newsletter

It is hard to believe that it is already May and the warmer summer months are coming soon. Our staff has been working on getting ready for our big event on Saturday, May 18th, at Legion Park in Arlington, where we will be hosting our "Healthy Living in the Stilly Valley: Health and Safety Fair."

May is Mental Health Month, which is the perfect time to focus on self-care and taking care of each other. This month we will be hosting in-person Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid classes and several QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Trainings. Class information can be found in this newsletter.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events or classes.

Regards,

Ardis Schmiege

Superintendent / CEO

We are excited to announce that we will once again be at Legion Park on Saturday, May 18, from 10 am to 2 pm, for our “Healthy Living in the Stilly Valley” event! The focus of this year’s event is on health and safety for youth and adults. We have invited several local organizations who will have resource tables and giveaway items for community members to collect. There will also be a police car, fire truck, transit bus, and other vehicles for families to explore. We encourage kids to bring a bike or scooter, as well as their helmet, to participate in the Arlington Police Department’s annual “Bike Rodeo” skills course.

Building Your Coping Toolbox

Find the Mental Health America article and more examples by clicking HERE.

Everyone goes through periods of hardship and stress, and it’s important to take care of yourself and have tools on standby to use when times get tough.

A coping toolbox is a collection of skills, techniques, items, and other suggestions that you can turn to as soon as you start to feel anxious or distressed. No one thing works for everyone, and it may take some trial and error, but building a coping toolbox is a great way to be prepared for those times when your mental well-being starts to slip – think of it as a safety net. Creating your toolbox can be as simple as writing a list (on your phone or on paper) of what helps, like breathing exercises or going for a run – this way, when you start struggling with your mental health, you don’t have to remember what to do or search for tips. You can also have a physical toolbox and fill it with things like a stress ball, written notes to yourself, and photos that make you happy. If you make a physical toolbox, it’s a good idea to still include a list of (non-physical) coping skills that help.

IF YOU’RE STARTING FROM SCRATCH, HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

  • Mood Boosters
  • Play with an animal.
  • Watch a movie you loved when you were younger.
  • Make a list of places you want to travel or things you want to see in your own town.
  • Address Your Basic Needs
  • Eat a healthy snack.
  • Take a shower or bath.
  • Take a nap.
  • Process Feelings
  • Draw how you feel.
  • Scream.
  • Let yourself cry.
  • Volunteering/Acts of Kindness
  • Do something nice for someone you know.
  • Help a stranger.
  • Volunteer your time.
  • Problem Solving
  • Make a list of potential solutions to problems.
  • Make a list of your strengths.
  • Hobbies/Stress Relievers
  • Learn something new.
  • Play a game or do a puzzle.
  • Get a plant and start a garden.
  • Relaxation Exercises
  • Practice belly breathing.
  • Find a guided meditation on YouTube.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Ask for Help
  • Text a friend.
  • Call a family member.
