In the News

The Space Coast continues to grow — but without sustainable funding, the infrastructure to support that growth is at risk. Thanks to our news media partners at Florida Today for spotlighting the funding gap that threatens the ability to keep up with this demand.

“We’re at a critical point,” said Georganna Gillette, Executive Director. “If we want to maintain safety and quality of life, it’s going to take strategic planning and serious investment.”

Brevard Gains 15 New Certified Helmet Fitters

In celebration of Bike Month, the SCTPO hosted a helmet fit training session led by regional expert Shelby Villatoro. This hands-on training equipped participants with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure a proper helmet fit and promote bicycle safety in our community.

We’re proud to announce that 15 new certified helmet fitters are now ready to roll! These passionate safety advocates will help spread the message of safe cycling across the Space Coast. A big thank you to our incredible partners for their commitment to Vision Zero: Health First, Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Brevard Schools Foundation, Palm Bay Fire Rescue, and the Brevard Mountain Bike Association (BMBA).

FDOT Brevard County Projects in Orbit

SR 520 Safety Improvements Complete

Construction is officially complete on State Road 520 from Aurora Road to the Hubert Humphrey Causeway in Brevard County. As part of this project, crews repaved the full corridor and implemented several safety enhancements. These upgrades include:

  • Reconstructing and extending curbs to reduce pedestrian crossing distances
  • Enhancing crosswalk visibility
  • Upgrading pedestrian signals for improved accessibility

These improvements aim to create a safer, more efficient roadway for all users. For more information, visit: https://www.cflroads.com/project/442885-1

IHB Bike Safety Upgrades

New green pavement markings have been added at the intersection of S.R. A1A and Eau Gallie Boulevard to enhance the visibility of bike lanes and crossings. These vibrant upgrades are designed to:

  • Help drivers better see bicyclists
  • Improve overall intersection safety
  • Encourage safer, more responsible road-sharing

We love seeing more safety enhancements like these on Space Coast roadways.

Clearlake PHB Outreach

FDOT D5 recently partnered with Endeavour Elementary: A Partnership School to educate students and families about a newly installed Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) located in their school zone. This beacon is one of five new PHBs now active along Clearlake Road (S.R. 501), stretching from S.R. 520 (W. King Street) to Industry Road in Cocoa. The team popped up to share safety resources and goodies with students, underscoring the importance of safe walking and crossing.

Public Engagement Recaps

Giving Back at North Brevard's

Greatest Baby Shower

SCTPO staff had a wonderful time earlier this month at North Brevard's Greatest Baby Shower held at The Grove Church in Titusville. Our team was on-site sharing free traffic safety goodies like coloring books, high-visibility vests, bookmarks, VZ fans and more all designed to protect our tiniest travelers and their families. Every conversation leads us closer to the goal of zero!

Student Art Promotes Bike Safety at Roosevelt Elementary

Congrats to Pedro and MacKenzie from Roosevelt Elementary for their winning designs in FDOT D5's Bike Safety Symbol Contest! Their creative artwork is now displayed on the shared use path in front of the school, serving as a colorful reminder of the importance of bike safety. Shout out to the PE and art teachers who encouraged participation.

Schools Celebrate Bike & Roll to School Day in Style

Earlier this month, the SCTPO and Brevard Public Schools celebrated National Bike & Roll to School Day, where students, families, and staff members rolled out together for a healthy, active morning ride. We had 12 enthusiastic communities participate in rolling events and their energy showed how fun active transportation can be.

A huge round of applause goes to the law enforcement agencies who rode alongside the students, kept intersections secure and spirits high. Thank you to everyone who pedaled, scooted, and cheered each of you moves us closer to safer streets and a healthier Space Coast!

SCTPO Staff Spotlights

Staff Attends FL Commuter Transportation Summit

In April, SCTPO staff attended the 2025 Florida Commuter Transportation Summit in Orlando, where experts came together to share ideas and solutions for improving how Floridians move. We’re especially proud that our Senior Transportation Planner, Sarah Kraum, served on a panel alongside Space Coast Area Transit Director, Terry Jordan, offering insights on sustainable planning and coordination.

New Team Members Become Helmet Fit Certified

We’re excited to share that three of our newest team members (Madelyn Calvert, Leah Nepo, and Patty Rendon) are now officially trained in proper helmet fitting! This certification ensures they’re ready to support our bike safety outreach efforts and help keep our community’s riders safe, one helmet at a time. You’ll see them in action at upcoming events, helping ensure every helmet fits just right.

Community Partner Shout Outs

Shout out to the City of Titusville and Titusville PD for gifting Oak Park student, Miguel, with a new bicycle and helmet which he will use as transportation to and from school. We appreciate their support of active transportation choices and supplying students with life-saving safety resources.

Shout out to Indian Harbour Beach PD for conducting another Operation Best Foot Forward to ensure drivers STOP for pedestrians—because it’s the law! Their efforts resulted in 12 Traffic Stops, 11 Citations, 2 Written Warnings, and

2 Verbal Warnings. Way to promote Vision Zero!

Shout out to Melbourne Beach PD for their outstanding efforts in promoting bike and low-speed vehicle safety near Gemini Elementary! Through education and engagement, officers:

raised awareness about the Florida helmet law and seatbelt compliance in low-speed vehicles.
