Faithful God,
You guide us on the path of life
and your goodness is our constant companion.
Be with our new Shepherd, Pope Leo XIV,
in his service of the Church.
Fill him with the power of your Spirit,
the peace of your presence
and the compassion of Christ.
Amen.

The Joy of Giving –
Small Sacrifices
We all live within a budget. St. Bon’s is certainly no different. Asking for gifts to sustain and rebuild our school is certainly an uncomfortable but absolutely needed process. As we continue to strive for 100% participation from our school families, we ask you to consider the cost of a small sacrifice. A cup of daily coffee from Tim’s over a three-year period would easily amass over $1,800. A monthly night out of dining, for a family of four, could amount to over $5,000 over a three-year period. The question for all is, will we prioritize our school and our future over something we may readily be able to change through spending behavior? We ask for your sacrifice and to join us.

What's Happening at St. Bon's?
June is just around the corner, and looking back, May was nothing short of extraordinary for our students and staff. It was a month filled with learning, growth, milestones, and unforgettable moments. Here are some of the standout highlights from the past few weeks:
- Our Kindergarten Class, along with Ms. Isaacs and Mr. Butt, held our Crowning of Mary to honour our prayer intentions for the month of May.
- Our Music Program ensembles participated in the Rotary Music Festival. This prestigious event brought together talented choral, jazz, and wind/symphonic ensembles from Newfoundland and beyond, offering them coaching from renowned educators. Each of our ensembles delivered exceptional performances, earning gold standards across the board and receiving high praise from adjudicators!
-
Mark Callanan visited with students in Grades 7-12, sharing his love of poetry and some of his poems. Mark is the author of three full-length collections of poetry. Romantic, his most recent, was selected for the CBC’s “Best Canadian Poetry of 2021” list and was one of twelve books shortlisted for the 2021 International Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry. He co-edited The Breakwater Book of Contemporary Newfoundland Poetry and was one of the founding editors of the St. John’s-based literary journal Riddle Fence. Mark lives in St. John’s, where he currently serves as the city’s Poet Laureate.
- Our Grade 3-6 athletes put on an impressive display at TrackFest 2025, demonstrating both skill and exceptional sportsmanship. Many participants earned ribbons for their achievements. Their dedication and teamwork made us incredibly proud.
-
Ms. Rose and Grade 5 and 6 students in the Newspaper Club published their highly anticipated Spring newspaper, Spring Thoughts at SBC. With dedication and enthusiasm, the students spent hours researching and writing engaging articles on a variety of topics, from school events to community highlights. Their creativity and teamwork are demonstrated on every page, showcasing their commitment to delivering a publication that is both informative and entertaining. You can view their latest edition HERE. Congratulations on a job well done!
- Our High School Boys Soccer Team secured the School Sports NL AA 2024-25 Varsity Provincial Championship, showcasing exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork under the leadership of Coach Chris Bridon. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and well-earned victory!
- We warmly invited our community to join us in celebrating Mother's Day with a beautiful Mass at the Basilica, followed by a reception in the Aula Maxima. Lunch and refreshments were served as we gathered to honour and appreciate all the mothers and mother figures who enrich our lives with love and guidance every day.
- Our Junior High Hockey Team triumphed at the 20th Anniversary Raven's Hockey Invitational, securing gold medals and the Tier 1 Champion title—an unforgettable victory celebrated by proud supporters!
- Our senior students lent a hand with the community clean-up at McMorran Centre earlier this month. It was a wonderful opportunity to give back. Great job!
- Brandon Joy, a member of the Canadian National Blind Hockey Team, visited Grade 6 classes alongside his guide dog, Cozzy. Twice a gold medalist in international tournaments, Brandon was diagnosed with a rare eye disease at four years old. He started playing Blind Hockey in 2017 and, seeing the need for a program in Newfoundland, founded the Newfoundland Eyelanders with his father in 2018. The program, open to ages four and up, is completely free to ensure accessibility for all. During his visit, students learned about Brandon’s journey, Blind Hockey, and the vital role Cozzy plays in his life
- Our Elementary Chamber Choir just finished a special project in collaboration with the Presentation Sisters. Sister Paula Delahunty, who is from Calvert, NL, wrote a beautiful story about the life of Nano Nagle, the founder of the Presentation Sisters in Ireland. She also composed a wonderful song to accompany the book. This audiobook will be entitled "Nano's Lantern" will be published worldwide later this year. It was wonderful to work with Sister Paula on this project and help bring her song to life!
- Congratulations to our Primary Drama Club for their incredible production this month. Their talent and dedication truly shined, making for an amazing performance. A special thank you to Krista Hynes for her hard work and leadership in running the group this year - your efforts have made a lasting impact! Well done, everyone!

As a keepsake, students received their gel electrophoresis imaging—an exciting step in their scientific journey!
- The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame sponsors an annual medical outreach program called Discovery Day in Health Sciences. Five students from St. Bon's attended a keynote presentation by Dr. Rod Russell at Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine. From there, the students were sent to various workshops and seminars from various health science faculties and schools. Our students participated in anatomy, microscopy, pathology, oncology, and nursing sessions. It was an excellent introduction to the various aspects of health research and delivery.
