~ May 2025 ~

Hello CVOA,

Message from the Co-President . . . . .

Greetings CVOA members,

Who is Thom Johnston?…a man who wears many hats.🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢

Thom has been President of CVOA for the past two years and was Vice President when I was the previous President. It’s been a great pleasure working with Thom these last couple of years as his Vice-President.

Since joining CVOA in 2017, Thom and Patti have been active members always ready to volunteer and in a thoughtful way take on a project and responsibility for seeing it to completion. Thom has been a dedicated leader of CVOA who successfully directed the organization and also prompted it to address some long standing questions and issues. Thom deserves a great big thank you and round of applause 👏👏 from our members for his many years of hard work, dedication and leadership.

For one more year Thom and I will continue in CVOA leadership as Co-Presidents. One of our major goals is to pass the torch to other members before the next Annual Meeting.

This is a ‘ Rain or Shine ‘ event.

Raft Up Adventure at Holbrook Harbor

Saturday July 5

Let’s Take CVOA to the Water

We are planning a raft up in Holbrook Harbor on July 5th, rain date of the 6th. Holbrook is located just south of Castine in Penobscot Bay. Anyone with a boat can join us there midmorning to spend a day or night! If you don’t have a boat you can drive to the Holbrook Island Sanctuary and boaters can pick you up or you can tag along with a boater to join the fun. Holbrook Sanctuary has wonderful hiking trails, beautiful beaches and is a great harbor for anchoring. Holbrook Island is also accessible with a

boat-dinghy, kayak or canoe.

If you are interested please reach out to Dan Hitchcock or Tracy Goller at CVOA.Secretary@gmail.com and we’ll make a list of those attending to help match boaters with landlubbers. If you are joining with a boat, let us know if you can take others aboard and how many. Please RSVP by June 27 so we can know who to expect.

Stonington Outing

CVOA is having an outing this September in Stonington, ME (not CT!). More details will follow in the coming months. There will be a number of activities that members can enjoy, including golf, tennis, hiking, biking, boating, exploring Isle au Haut, beautiful beaches and much more.

We are letting members know of this event now because there are limited options for people to stay. The number of nights that you stay is up to you. Stonington and Deer Isle have become a popular destination for weddings, reunions and vacations, especially throughout the summer and fall.

You should consider making your reservations soon. Be sure to verify the property’s cancellation policy, should your plans change.

Range News

Spring is Approaching

Welcome Spring! The Range is looking clear of snow and is ready for its yearly cleanup, on Saturday, May 17th at 10am. Fortunately, we only have the small Gate House that is in need of a little paint. We need to rebuild and replace targets and put out the Archery Net, targets, and clay throwers. General window washing, sweeping, and vacuuming up those pesky cluster flies is always fun! But if you can help, we'll fire up a new grill and treat you to lunch.

New Gate Code goes into effect on Monday, May 5th. You should have received your new badges. If not, you can contact me at the email below. Remember to have your range badge or a copy of your membership verification letter on you when using the range. A copy on your phone is acceptable. Make sure you take a photo of both sides of your badge, as the back has the Gate Code. Range Officers are usually around on the weekends, but may not be in frequent attendance mid week, but expect you may be asked for membership verification.

Our first programs for the shooting season will be Introduction to Basic Handguns Saturday, June 28th and NRA Range Safety Officer Certification Sunday, June 29th.The classes are open to both members and non-members. The cost is $150 and will be taught by our own CVOA member and Certified Instructors Tammy Acker and Deb Shilling, of Howell's Gun Club in Windham, ME. CVOA is in need of more Range Safety Officers and will pay the first $100 toward the course for any CVOA member. This is a vital service you can provide to any club, so if you are a member of more than one gun club, you may be able to have the additional $50 fee fronted by them. Sign up by emailing Diane Stone at CVOA.range@gmail.com.

Our clay shooting season is here! First shoot will be on Sunday, May 18th. We will host 5 Stand Shoots every Saturday and Trap Shoots every Sunday starting at 9am until noon (or when all shooters are done, so come early) These shoots are open to the public, so bring your friends! This is not a competition and beginners are welcome. It's a great way to learn or practice these shooting sports.

As a range member, your guests are welcome. Shooting guests should sign the green Day Use waiver form and pay $10/day. Non shooting guests need not sign in, but it is the responsibility of the member to ensure all posted rules are followed. Any questions, please contact me.

I hope to see our Range Members enjoying our other CVOA events. Come meet old friends and make new ones. CVOA folks know how to have fun any time of year.

Enjoy our beautiful Range and be safe!
