It has been almost a month since airstrikes devastated Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza in the early hours of Palm Sunday, April 13. More than 500 patients and staff were forced to evacuate in twenty minutes, just seconds before missiles struck the hospital campus, destroying the two-story diagnostic laboratory and severely damaging the emergency department, pharmacy, and nearby buildings, including St. Philip’s Church.
And yet, in the rubble, Ahli's mission endures.
Despite the destruction and trauma, the dedicated hospital team returned almost immediately to continue providing care. Today, Ahli is once again serving hundreds of patients each day, treating wounds, offering emergency care, and providing comfort in the midst of crisis. The need is overwhelming, but the commitment of Ahli’s staff is even stronger.
Suhaila Tarazi, Ahli’s General Director says, “The strength and perseverance of our staff at Ahli is rooted in love and compassion for their patients, their community, and for Ahli’s mission of healing. Even in the darkest and most uncertain times, they show up with courage, dignity, and a quiet determination that speaks louder than words.”
Ahli Arab Hospital is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and has served the people of Gaza for over 140 years. It remains a rare place of healing for all people, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or ability to pay.
