Coyotes in our community: What you need to know
Coyote sightings are common in Mississauga as urban development reduces their natural habitat. The City of Mississauga actively monitors coyote activity and responds to resident concerns through our Animal Services Division. Staff routinely provide education, outreach, and place signage in areas where coyote sightings are frequent. While coyote incidents are very low, it’s important to know how to stay safe:
· Never feed coyotes, as this makes them lose their natural fear of humans and encourages them to return.
· Secure food sources by properly storing garbage and avoiding leaving pet food outside.
· If you have pets, always supervise them outdoors and walk dogs on a short, non-extendable leash.
· If you encounter a coyote, don’t run. Instead, make yourself look big, wave your arms, clap, or yell to scare it away.
Residents can help with coyote monitoring by reporting any sightings through the City’s online Coyote Map.
If a coyote appears aggressive or sick, contact Mississauga Animal Services at 905-896-5858 or dial 3-1-1. For more tips and resources, visit Mississauga.ca/coyotes.

Launch of Project ERASE
In a continued effort to enhance road safety, Peel Regional Police is partnering with neighbouring police services to help eliminate street racing and other high-risk driving behaviours through Project ERASE (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). This annual, multijurisdictional enforcement campaign focuses on high-visibility, strategic operations to address street racing, stunt driving and illegal car rallies across the Greater Toronto Area.
Since 2022, Peel Regional Police has recorded a 154 per cent increase in street racing-related charges, rising from just over 800 charges in 2022 to more than 2,100 in 2024.
Peel Regional Police also works closely with the cities of Mississauga and Brampton to ensure bylaws are enforced, including fines up to $800 for participants and spectators at illegal car rallies. In addition, offenders are subject charges, vehicle impoundment, and driver’s licence suspension.
To help keep roads safe, residents are urged to report dangerous driving behaviours by contacting Road Safety Services at 905-453-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by filing an online report via Road Watch. Photo and video evidence of dangerous driving incidents can also be submitted through the following evidence submission portal.

Setting Out and Storing Your Waste Bins
I have received concerns from residents regarding waste bins not being set out or stored properly and I would like to provide more information accordingly. For most households, garbage and recycling collection happens every other week:
· Garbage is picked up one week.
· Recycling is picked up the next week.
· Organics is picked up every week.
When
· Put your bins on the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
· Remove your bins from the curb by 8 p.m. on your collection day. If your bins aren't collected by 8 p.m., report waste not picked up.
Where
· Place your bins as close to the road as possible without blocking the road or sidewalk.
· Place your bins away from parked vehicles and trees or other overhead obstructions.
· Make sure the collection trucks can reach your bins.
How
· Close the bin lid completely.
· Place your bins an arm's length apart from one another.
· Face the front of the bins toward the street and the handles towards your house.
· Lock your organics bin lid. (The lock must be in the vertical position for collection.)
Per the City’s regulations, waste and recycling collection cart storage are restricted to the rear or side yard, garage or carport when there is space. Front yard storage of waste and recycling collection carts would be prohibited except where it is not practical as determined upon review by a municipal enforcement officer. Carts permitted in the front yard would be required to be located beside a building, accessory building or a fence and arranged in an orderly manner. For mor info on waste collection, visit peelregion.ca/waste.

Bike, E-Bike and E-Scooter Safety
Before you begin exploring Mississauga’s 500 kilometres of multi-use trails, park pathways, bike lanes and cycling routes on your bike, e-bike, or e-scooter, remember to familiarize yourself with all necessary safety tips, rules and etiquette to ensure a positive experience for you and those around you:
· E-bike users must wear a helmet. Cyclists and e-scooter users must wear a helmet if under the age of 18. However, all riders are encouraged to wear a helmet for their safety.
· E-bike and e-scooter users must be 16 years old or older to ride a device.
· Check your speed when riding an e-bike or e-scooter. Maximum permitted speed for e-scooters is 24 km/h, and for e-bikes it’s 32 km/h.
· Be alert and stay aware of your surroundings. Obey all road rules, signage, traffic signals and stop signs. Do not ride on the sidewalk.
· Ride your bike, e-bike or e-scooter solo. Unless your device is built for two people, double riding is not permitted.
· Stay visible to drivers by ensuring your bike, e-bike and e-scooter has a working bell/horn, light and reflectors. You must have a light when riding at night.
· Be courteous to other trail users. Always keep to the right of the trail, particularly if you are traveling at a slower speed. If passing others, always pass on your left and use your bell or a signal before passing another cyclist or pedestrian.
· Be aware of others and don’t block the trail. If stopping for a break, pull off to the side or off of the trail completely.
· When approaching a sharp turn that obstructs your view on your bike, approach slowly, use your bell or give a verbal warning and proceed when clear to do so.
The City is adding more than 100 parking stations to help provide a more orderly and controlled approach to parking while keeping regular public bike racks available for personal devices. The stations will either be marked with physical infrastructure or have markings or a rubber mat on the ground. They will help keep devices organized in high-demand areas including near GO train stations, City-owned transit terminals and express bus stops. There will also be more parking stations in densely populated areas of Mississauga including all five Business Improvement Areas
