Body & Soul: Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione – A Turning Point in Music

  • Sat., May 10, 2025 at 6 pm Trinity Church, Lakeville, CT
  • Sun., May 11, 2025 at 4 pm Saint James Place, Great Barrington, MA

Roman composer Emilio Cavalieri wrote and premiered his groundbreaking work Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo with great success in 1600. It is the first dramatic stage work fully set to music. The question remains, whether this work is considered an opera or an oratorio (sacred drama)!

The subject, an allegorical drama, is a lively debate over worldly vanities versus a spiritual life. It features nine opposing characters: Soul, Body, Counsel, Intellect, Time, Pleasure, Guardian Angel, World, Worldly Life, and a chorus that comments on the action, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Solos, duets, ensemble pieces and instrumental interludes alternate to create a varied dramatic and entertaining representation of the plot. Full Press Release - Click HERE

Transfer Station Recycling Advisory Committee (TRAC) Talk

PRESCRIPTION PILL BOTTLE COLLECTION

AT THE TRANSFER STATION

Alex Wilbur, a junior at HVRHS, created a program, in collaboration Salisbury’s First Selectman and the Transfer Station Manager, which provides a receptacle for empty prescription pill bottles (usually amber or green color – as distinguished from over-the-counter pill bottles). Your contributions to this well-labeled blue bin located to the left of the office door at the Transfer Station can be shipped to health care facilities in underserved areas in Central America where medications are often just wrapped in paper, or dropped in someone’s hand. These prescription pill bottles cannot be recycled because of their size and the type of plastic resin) so giving them a second life is a win-win outcome.

FOOD WASTE PREVENTION WEEK RECAP

The children’s librarians at the Hotchkiss Library in Sharon and the Scoville Library in Salisbury brought young children together for Earth Day-related programs this past week, which introduced the work of worms in eating through food waste, and the benefits of compost. Children donned latex gloves to uncover red wigglers in a worm compost bin.

At The Hotchkiss School’s Fairfield Farm, several adults sat around a large table bearing items of questionable freshness. They learned a thing or two about the science of food’s shelf life from Sharon resident, Carol Hawran. There were items as old as 15 years (canned applesauce and currants) and as new as last week (wilted snow peas). Lots of information, lots of questions, lots of laughs, lots of tasty food prepared for sampling.

TIP OF THE MONTH:

When recycling, just do the best you can! Look at text and graphics on signs at the Transfer Station, ask questions, or go to recyclect.com for assistance.
