LETTER FROM MAISA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear ISD Superintendents,

Welcome to your latest InSiDe Update! This edition highlights the powerful synergy between MAISA and Michigan's ISDs, a partnership that fosters innovation and ensures a bright future for every child in our state. Crucially, this vital work thrives only when we cultivate environments where everyone feels included and valued in our shared mission to ensure all students succeed. Thank you for your invaluable contributions and unwavering passion in making a profound positive difference.

Here are my three things:

1) We will soon be sending all of our members our draft agenda for our summer conference. Most importantly, I want to thank those ISD superintendents who provided input on our recent survey on critical topics. We have included many of these requests. Look for more information later this week.

2) I recently had the privilege of attending the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual policy conference on Mackinac Island. It was an incredibly valuable experience, offering a unique opportunity to connect with key legislative leaders, including leaders in business, the non-profit sector, and higher education, where we engaged in critical discussions shaping our state's future. Most noteworthy is a greater conversation surrounding Michigan's literacy rates compared to other states. My concern, however, is that political leaders are again framing this narrative through their individual perceptions instead of a comprehensive understanding of the on-the-ground efforts and challenges. Crucially, this event provided an unparalleled platform for MAISA to ensure our legislators are fully aware of our exceptional work throughout Michigan. These interactions underscored the vital role that Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) play in Michigan's educational landscape. It provided a perfect platform to highlight how ISDs are uniquely positioned to deliver exceptional, cost-effective services that directly support our Local Education Agencies (LEAs). MAISA is focused on telling the ISD story and advocating and listening to the legislators discuss Michigan politics and the current focus of the Senate and House. Regarding federal legislators, I leaned in on the potential Medicaid cuts that would negatively affect many children and their families.

3) Inside this edition, you'll also discover:

How diverse classroom libraries are proving to be powerful tools, not only through igniting student growth but also inspiring and invigorating teachers.

You will also learn about how focused skills practice through homework can directly contribute to improving student attendance. Lastly, we explore the resources and support available through the ISD PR Network.

MiRead

Feasibility Study

We're excited to share an update on MiRead, an innovative tool currently undergoing a feasibility study. MiRead has the potential to significantly support educators in addressing the needs of students with dyslexia, especially as the PA146 requires individualized reading plans.

What makes MiRead unique is its ability to generate reading plans that incorporate assessment data and evidence-based strategies, including the Literacy Essentials. This is incredibly valuable for educators as they develop and implement these required plans.

This study is being conducted in close collaboration with the work of the GELN and SEILN networks. We're committed to understanding and aligning our efforts to support districts and ISDs as they implement the law and provide comprehensive student support.

We'll continue to share updates on the study's progress. In the meantime, we encourage you to consider the potential impact of such tools in supporting your districts and students, especially as MiRead will leverage our shared resources like MiGreatDataLake, MiDataHub, and MiCloud.

Classroom Library Enhancement

How Diverse Libraries Ignite Student Growth and Teacher Inspiration

Chandra Ziegler and Colleen Sundholm, Literacy Coaches from Marquette-Alger RESA, created a new resource about the impact of Classroom Library Enhancement.

The presentation focuses on classroom library enhancement and literacy growth. It highlights the historical evolution of reading instruction and the importance of diverse and culturally relevant texts. In the presentation, Ziegler and Sundholm highlight how these elements ignite student growth and teacher inspiration.

Key points include the impact of access to books on reading volume and motivation, and the support that classroom libraries provide for vocabulary and comprehension. The presentation also discusses a program that provided teachers with professional development and diverse texts, leading to positive impacts on both teachers and students, including increased engagement and a more organized library environment.

Telling Our Special Education Stories

Today, in every corner of the state, special education is going beyond traditional programs and traditional thinking — it’s about unlocking each student’s unique strengths and needs.

With personalized support for more than 217,000 students up to 26 years of age, we empower students as they learn and grow alongside their peers and achieve great things, supporting not just their academic skills but their entire futures.

By telling their stories through the Limitless Potential Campaign, we can show how special education not only supports students with unique needs but also benefits their families and the entire community.

The Limitless Potential Campaign

  • enables sharing of special education stories across Michigan, educating the public and highlighting successes.
  • fosters appreciation and understanding, ensuring that everyone recognizes how vital these supports are for creating inclusive and thriving environments for all.
