Driving Success: The Role of Leadership, Management, Supervision, and Culture in Public Works Transportation

For many, transportation divisions, departments, or agencies are the backbone of public works departments, as roadways are the most significant part of public works infrastructure. The focus of transportation and transportation projects has changed from moving vehicles from point A to point B as fast as the roadway can take you to making roadways available to all—ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility for your communities. To effectively navigate the challenges of evolving technologies, workforce development, and public expectations, organizations must integrate strong leadership, effective management, competent supervision, and a healthy workplace culture.

Learning leadership: Inspiring the best collective effort from individuals in your transportation agency.

Leadership in transportation agencies and working on transportation projects is about managing resources, inspiring and encouraging teams, and motivating a shared vision for the project and division. Transportation divisions and projects must ensure safe mobility for all road users and address moving traffic efficiently. Additionally, many agencies have adopted a zero-crash vision for their jurisdictions. This creates opportunities and challenges for many agencies. Effective leaders share the vision of ensuring safety for all users and implementing innovations in how traffic is managed.
