Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance

May 2025 Edition

Why MEGA?

We are a community based non-profit Local Development Corporation governed by representatives from New York’s local government entities, just like you. Formally established in 2001, MEGA serves local governments and affiliated entities by group purchasing of electricity, natural gas and other energy products and services. It presently serves more than 30 county governments and more than 250 municipalities and school districts.

MEGA is the only municipal energy entity in New York State that uses a competitive public bid process to secure the best electricity and natural gas suppliers, meaning you can join a pre-negotiated contract without having to issue your own RFP. All bids comply with NYS General Municipal Law, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

There are no fees to receive pricing or become a member—the only charges are $1.50 per MWh and $0.12 per DTh--so you only pay for the energy you use. Any revenue is reinvested back into our community.

MEGA’s staff act as your advocate throughout the energy procurement process, ensuring you receive competitive pricing, vetted contract terms, and expert guidance. In partnership with EnergyNext, MEGA also offers free consultations, helping you navigate everything from contract details to the best time to lock in pricing.

Navigating New York’s Electricity Market:

A MEGA Lunch and Learn

MEGA recently hosted a lunch and learn on navigating the New York State electricity market with our partners at Constellation Energy. Britt Lyons, our head presenter, is a principal in the commodities management group for Constellation and is an expert in educating on the energy industry. Britt went over key market fundamentals, current price trends, an early summer outlook, and much more that is beneficial to making informed energy decisions in today's market. We want to thank all of our members that participated in this lunch and learn. If you missed it, check out the recording and link to the presentation below.

U.S. Electricity Demand to Increase

 25% by 2030, 78% by 2050

An increase in peak electricity demand, without matching increases in reliable generation, could result in grid strains that cause very high spikes in electricity rates. AI and cloud-computing growth, new manufacturing, crypto-mining, EVs and broader electrification are all pushing peak demand higher. Below is a chart showing peak electricity demand growth over the past 35-years, and the projected growth over the next 25 years.

Early projections show that the projected surge in consumption could raise retail rates by 15% to 40%, depending on the region. New York is expected to be toward the bottom of that projection, as electrification and EVs are the current main drivers in local demand growth. On the generation side, it is believed that new power-producing capacity additions would need to rise to roughly 80 gigawatts per year from 2025-2045, which is double the pace of the growth seen over the past five years. NYSEG Tariff Update: What You Need to Know

On March 20, 2025, the NYPSC approved new tariff changes for NYSEG that went into effect on April 1, 2025. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Updated Loss Allowance: NYSEG has increased the allowable loss in gas transportation from 0.0000% to 0.0216% for Aggregation Pool Operators. This change aligns pricing for both gas service and transportation customers so that costs are fairly divided.

Impact on Your Bill: Most customers will see more consistent pricing as the change ensures both groups pay similar rates for lost gas during transportation. However, customers on fixed-price contracts might notice a slight rate increase because NYSEG must pass on the extra cost associated with the higher loss allowance.

Communication: NYSEG will inform its customers of these changes via their Gas Transportation Billing System.

In simple terms, while most customers will enjoy fair and transparent pricing, fixed-price contract holders should be prepared for a small increase in their rates.

The spring season is upon us and so is conference season! One of the tenants of the MEGA program is the reinvesting and interacting with our members, which was definitely accomplished this May!

MEGA had the opportunity to attend, exhibit, and showcase with so many amazing organizations this month. In the past month MEGA exhibited at The New York State Town Clerk's Association annual meeting, the New York State Association of Purchasing Officials Aannual conference, and the Public Employer Risk Management Association. MEGA also was a sponsor at the New York State Association of Clerks of County Legislative Boards in the beautiful Wyoming County, as well at the New York State Association of Counties County Finance School in which MEGA sponsored a Utility Bill Management session with our partners at Constellation.

Optimizing Your Bottom Line Through

Utility Bill Management

Utility bill management services can be crucial for municipalities trying to organize and optimize their utility bill processes. These services are able to help save staff time, manage resources, and create data necessary for the NYSERDA Clean Energy Community program. Zach McDermott, from Constellation, gave a fantastic presentation with use cases and the benefits of UBM for municipalities. Visit the microsite or view the presentation below to find how UBM can help your municipality of school.

Warren County

Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks is the long-time member and this May’s member spotlight, Warren County. Whether you’re looking for adventure, history, or a place to put down roots, Warren County has something for everyone. We want to thank Warren County for being an integral part of our alliance, as well as thank the Town of Queensbury, the Town of Stony Creek, and the Town of Bolton for being valued members.

MEGA: The Power of Partnership

Our mission is to serve public entities in New York State. Any revenue we generate is invested in serving our members. Our focus is lower costs and better service for our members, and as a non-profit local development corporation that focus will never change.
