• ON A PERSONAL NOTE •

+ Teri's World

Between the raindrops and chilly days, I’ve been spending time in our community garden. Everything is pretty much planted. This may be my last year, as it is a lot of work. This last weekend wrapped up the soccer and flag football season for some of my grandsons. They gave it their all and did a great job. Now it’s on to swimming for all four of them! I am looking forward to spending more time with them once school ends this month. My son and I checked out Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, which we learned is really a fen, on Mother’s Day. I had no idea there were rattlesnakes in Ohio. It’s a great place to visit and walk the boardwalk.

+ Nathan's Notes

As the girls wrap up their school year this week, it’s hard to believe it’s already that time of year. Both of them have had a great year. Ainsley has learned to read and enjoys reading picture books and creating her own. She did a great job on her basketball team and performed well in her two piano recitals. Ellie finishes 6th grade this year with straight A’s and was one of two in her grade to combine straight A’s with a character “pillar” award. She also won two medals in her cross-country meets and enjoyed participating in her school’s musical. Lisa and I are proud of their growth and accomplishments this year as they look forward to some fun summer activities.

+ Tracey's Time

Andy and I just celebrated our 36th anniversary! It seems like yesterday and we wonder where the time has gone. It was a simple dinner for two. We plan to attend two concerts. The first is in town on Friday evening and the second is next week in Cleveland.

We made enough progress on our “homework” to finally bring the RV home from storage. Preparations for summer travel will be underway very soon. Hopefully, we will complete our “To Do” List while dodging raindrops and attending Graduation celebrations.

+ Erik's Exploits

May is often associated with Spring Cleaning, and that has certainly been true for me so far. The amount of stuff we've accumulated over the years has reached a breaking point, and most of my free time this month has been dedicated to addressing this. We were able to get rid of some stuff at last week’s German Village Valuables Sale. For once it didn’t rain and we managed to get rid of quite a few things.

Current Economic and Investment Information

LESS WITH MORE – US Non-Farm Productivity fell 0.8% in Q1 for its first quarterly decline since Q2 2022. As productivity declined, Unit Labor Costs increased by a more than expected 5.7%, the highest quarterly increase since Q1 2024. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics)

TEACH THEM BETTER – Despite nearly half of high school students (45%) saying they took a personal finance class in school, 80% of teens have either never heard of FICO score or don't fully understand what it measures. Meanwhile, 43% of teens believe that an 18% interest rate on debt is manageable. (Source: Junior Achievement)

INFLATION – Inflation in April was mild, with the consumer-price index rising 0.2%, matching economists’ expectations and showing no immediate impact from recent tariff hikes. Year-over-year inflation cooled to 2.3%, the lowest in four years, largely due to a significant drop in gasoline prices. (Source: WSJ)

GOING DIGITAL – The Social Security Administration is launching a new feature that allows my Social Security account holders to securely access their Social Security number (SSN) online, offering an alternative to the SSN card. The feature will be available starting early this summer in the "my Social Security" online portal. (Source: SSA)

How Social Security and Medicare

Transformed Aging in America

Two lifelines for older adults reach important milestones in 2025

By T.R. Reid

Source: AARP

After a long career as an office manager in St. Louis, Debbie Haupt retired at age 60 so she could provide full-time care for her ailing husband. “I had been planning to work at least until 68, maybe 70,” she says, “but Parkinson’s had other ideas.”

There was a problem, though: The Haupts hadn’t built up much of a retirement fund. “My 401(k) was tiny,” she laughs. “If I had eaten nothing but dog food, it would have lasted less than three years.

”Fortunately, as an older American, Haupt could rely on another source of sustenance.

“Social Security has been my lifeline,” she says. “I paid into it all those years, and when I badly needed the help, it was there.”

She began taking her benefit at 62, the earliest age of eligibility. Her husband was already drawing Social Security by then. When she reached 65, Haupt, now 71, qualified for another federal benefit.

Climate Change Affect Home Insurance

By Andrea Riquier & Ignacio Calderon

Source: USA Today

In the housing market, homeowners insurance has become the embodiment of the effects of climate change. Over the past several years, more frequent and more expensive severe weather events have strained insurance companies, even as skyrocketing premiums punish homeowners’ wallets.

Now, new research proves what many observers have assumed, but rarely quantified: insurance does shield homeowners from financial trouble in the wake of weather disasters, but existing guidelines for coverage are nowhere near adequate for the scale and scope of potential perils. Even more concerning, insurance costs may soon become too much for homeowners to afford.
