A Note from the Executive Director | | |
Providing training and support to the school health field is a cornerstone of NMASBHC's operations, and we have good news and bad news about what is on offer in the coming months. While the school year is coming to a close, the needs of students are growing greater as does the need for training. NMASBHC has a number of options to support SBHC work in these final days of spring and looking forward to the next school year.
To begin with, however, I must share the bad news. Due to the impacts of federal changes, the School Based Health Alliance (SBHA) has had to cancel the 2025 national conference. Please read this letter from our SBHA CEO to understand more. This means that NMASBHC will not be attending the conference, providing scholarships for youth to attend, or providing scholarships for members of our field to attend. However, that brings me to the good news...
NMASBHC will be providing scholarships to our field for the 2025 Head to Toe conference. Thanks to donations from friends of NMASBHC and the funds set aside for SBHA, we will be announcing scholarships in the fall for the November 4-6, 2025 event. We hope you will save the date!
In gratitude,
Nancy Rodriguez, nancy@nmasbhc.org

| | | Hi! I’m Sheena Moe (she, her, hers) the new Behavioral Health Consultant for the NM Alliance for School-Based Health Care! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have lived, learned and worked in New Mexico my entire life. I have experience working with children, youth, adults and families in various community serving roles for just over 14 years. I have had the privilege of receiving School-Based Health Care as a student, being a parent of a student who received School-Based Health Care and working on the Behavioral Health team at a School-Based Health Center. I am passionate about students receiving the healthcare, supports and services that they need to be successful in reaching their goals in education and in life. I am excited for the opportunity to learn from and partner with all of you as we work together to serve our students, families and communities. Please reach out and let me know how I can support you and your teams at sheena@nmasbhc.org. Looking forward to connecting with all of you!

I’m thrilled to join the incredible team at the New Mexico Alliance for School Based Health Centers. With decades of experience in business and five years at Envision New Mexico as a Quality Improvement Coach and Program Manager, I’m excited to bring my background to support and advance the mission of the Alliance. During my time at EnvisionNM, I had the privilege of visiting and collaborating with many of New Mexico’s dedicated SBHC teams, and I’m eager to re-engage with this inspiring community.
A proud graduate of the University of New Mexico, I live in the North Valley with my amazing wife, Sam, and our 14-year-old border collie, Jack. Outside of work, you’ll often find me running in Anderson Fields, taking leisurely walks with Jack, cooking alongside my wife, reading, writing, occasionally hitting a ball around an old golf course, and less occasionally doing yard work.

SBHCs help with the stress that May brings…
May is a very stressful and busy time for students. Events like graduation, the end of the school year, transitioning into summer, finals, and elections for extracurricular activities are all happening at the same time. This can cause students to feel very lonely and like they can’t catch their breath. During this time, I take the initiative to encourage my peers at my school to seek help when they need it and to remind them that these stressful times are only temporary.
Ruidoso SBHC Director, Ashlee McEwen, says her advice is “students who are feeling overwhelmed with the workload in May should make a list of what needs to be done and their due dates then prioritize what needs to be done so it doesn't feel like they have to do it all at one time. Making a schedule or to-do list is a great way to help manage the end of school stress. It can also be helpful to break large projects up into smaller pieces and work on one piece at a time. Students need to be sure to schedule in down time and time with friends as well. Rest and social interaction are an important part of managing stress.”
Our SBHC plays a crucial role in my school by educating students about health, providing care for illnesses, or support during hard or stressful times. The SBHC crew at Ruidoso High School welcomes students with open arms anytime they need it and plays a key role in promoting a healthy mind, spirit and body during some of the most stressful times.
