As the Southern Baptist Convention holds its Annual Meeting in Dallas, BWIM will host a conversation about the state of women in the SBC with Dr. Beth Allison Barr on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 7:30pm at First United Methodist Church of Dallas.
At the 2025 SBC Annual Meeting, it is anticipated that efforts will be renewed to pass a constitutional amendment banning churches from calling women pastors of any kind. Additionally, other issues affecting women, including the SBC’s Sexual Abuse Prevention & Response efforts and potentially resolutions related to women’s roles and bodies, are likely to be considered as well.
Dr. Barr will join Rev. Dr. Meredith Stone, BWIM’s Executive Director, to discuss the progression of these issues in the SBC and at the 2025 Annual Meeting, how they relate to the SBC’s past actions or inactions regarding women, and hopes they have for women in the SBC. The event will also include a book signing at the conclusion of the conversation.
Dr. Barr is the New York Times Best-Selling Author of Becoming the Pastor’s Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Women’s Path to Ministry (Brazos Press, 2025), USA Today Best-Selling Author of Making Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth (Brazos Press, 2021), and co-host of the acclaimed podcast, All the Buried Women.

| | Now there are even more ways to support Baptist Women in Ministry! And we've brought back and updated an old favorite with new options! Multiple colors and sizes available! | |
| | Having recently finished Angela Denker's Disciples of White Jesus: The Radicalization of American Boyhood in preparation for the BWIM Luncheon at the CBF General Assembly on Thursday, June 26, 2025, I am struck by Denker's accessible and engaging writing style. She skillfully unpacks the complex and layered issue of how Christian nationalist theology has profoundly shaped American boyhood and manhood. Denker compellingly demonstrates how this theology encourages boys and men to suppress their emotions in favor of a prescribed masculine identity. This emotional detachment diminishes boys’ and mens’ capacity for empathy and compassion while simultaneously creating internal conflict. I was particularly challenged by the chapter exploring how men are both perpetrators of this Christian nationalist theology and victims of its early indoctrination. As I consider strategies for cultivating more male advocates for women in ministry and leadership, the question of how to heal this deep rift in both men and boys is at the forefront of my mind. The work of developing male advocates requires dismantling the harmful effects of Christian nationalist masculinity that Denker so clearly articulates. Her focus on storytelling as a means of bridging divides suggests a powerful approach. By creating spaces for men to share and hear stories, we can break down these barriers and foster a deeper commitment to gender equity in ministry.
