Supporting First Tee

Several of our members volunteered at First Tee-Indiana School Skills Challenge held on May 9th. Seven schools with 70 students participated at Brookwood Golf Club while ten schools with 100 students participated at McMillan golf courses.

The road to the Skills Challenge starts earlier in the school year for the participants. First Tee, an organization dedicated to instilling character in children through golf, provides elementary schools with a golfing curriculum as a unit in gym class. Any school that implements the curriculum is eligible to send students to the challenge.

Here is a link to a great article about the day with a quote from our own Susan Roth. Click HERE

Tonya Lassus

What’s a fun fact or hobby outside of golf that you’d like to share with the group?

  • Outside of golf, I manage several rental properties and love staying active. I also enjoy planning trips whether it’s a weekend getaway or something more adventurous, I’m always up for exploring new places.

What do you hope to gain or achieve as part of our golf league?

  • I’m hoping to improve my game, enjoy the camaraderie, and build long-lasting friendships. And of course have a lot of fun along the way!

Learn a bit about Tonya Lassus

What inspired you to join the LPGA Amateurs, and how long have you been playing golf?

  • I joined the LPGA Amateurs to connect with other women who share the same love for the game and to challenge myself to improve in a supportive environment. I’ve been playing golf for a few years now off and on but really started getting more serious about it recently.

What’s your favorite golf course or golfing memory?

  • One of my favorite golf memories is playing a sunset round with close friends - it wasn’t about the score that day, just the laughs, great weather, and beautiful views. It reminded me of why I love the game.

Do you have a preferred golfing buddy, style, or strategy when playing?

  • I enjoy playing with easygoing partners who like to keep the round fun but still competitive. I tend to be strategically looking for smart shots rather than flashy ones but I’m not above celebrating a lucky bounce now and then!

What’s a fun fact or hobby outside of golf that you’d like to share with the group?

  • My other favorite hobby would have to be cooking. I love different types of food. New Orleans style food is my favorite.

What do you hope to gain or achieve as part of our golf league?

  • I want to play better and more often.

Learn a bit about Gretchen Gerber!

We missed getting a picture of Gretchen but will snag one on the course!

How long have you been playing golf?

  • I have been playing golf since grade school. I started at Arlington Park when the course was first built.

What’s your favorite golf course or golfing memory?

  • My favorite course is Cedar Creek. I was sad that it closed.

Do you have a preferred golfing buddy, style, or strategy when playing?

  • My golfing style would have to be "Ready-golf" and having fun.

Did You Know?

Hold onto your golf clubs, because here’s a swingin’ fact for you! LPGA Amateurs (formerly EWGA) has been teeing off since 1991!
