Honors BSN student Hannah Sherman earned second place in Section II at the 15th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 4, hosted by Florida Atlantic University's Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry (OURI). Her presentation, “The Effects of Iron Deficiency Anemia on Basic Military Training in Females in the Military,” was mentored by Dr. Candy Wilson.

Faculty, staff and students came together for a celebratory luncheon and pinning ceremony on April 8 to recognize this year's Kay Carpenter scholarship recipients. The scholarship, established by Kay Carpenter and BG Carter, is intended to encourage a never-ending cycle of giving as scholarship recipients “pay it forward” with their future contributions to the fund to support nursing students.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Leadership and Financial Administration student Genesi Gozalez (at far left), along with a team of students from Florida Atlantic, won the Health Equity Innovation Award during the 20th annual CLARION National Interprofessional Case Competition, hosted by the Student Board at the University of Minnesota on April 11 and 12.

Members of the college's Sigma Iota Xi at-Large Chapter collected hygiene items for its “Helping the Unhoused” project. The group delivered the donated items on April 30 to The Caring Place/Miami Rescue Mission Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood.

Nursing students and clinicians from the FAU/NCHA Community Health Center conducted blood pressure and mental health screenings at the Celebrate Westgate event on April 12. The Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (Florida Atlantic CARD) team joined the Center for this activity.

The Share Your Caring Heart event at the Cove Brewery on April 27, hosted by the Caring Hearts Auxiliary, raised over $16,500 in support of care giver programs and day center scholarships for the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center. The auxiliary is deeply grateful to everyone who participated, supported and helped to make this event an outstanding success.

College of Nursing spring graduates attended the Florida Atlantic University Alumni and Community Engagement's Toast to the Grads event on April 30, at the Flagler Credit Union Stadium Hyundai Deck on the Boca Raton campus. The traditional event honors the hard work of our new graduates and allows them to commemorate this momentous occasion with loved ones.

Celebrated professor, mentor and alumnus, Dr. Eric Shaw, passed away on April 12, after more than 50 years of extraordinary service to Florida Atlantic. He established an inspiring legacy of philanthropy, and he focused many of his efforts toward uplifting students in financial need and rewarding their high achievements including the winner of the College of Nursing's first annual Boykin-Shaw Excellence in Nursing Dissertation Award Competition on March 27. Debi Feiler, Caring Hearts Auxiliary Board member, passed away on April 21. The longtime community volunteer, fundraiser and advocate for several local charities also served on the board of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center and as chair of the "Keep Memories Alive" Walk-in-the-Mall in 2022.

Jeaneen Muller was promoted to assistant director of Alumni Relations and Community Engagement. She formerly served as the engagement coordinator for the College of Nursing.

Dr. Dimeka Darville successfully completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) defense at Nova Southeastern University in April. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner at the FAU/NCHA Community Health Center in West Palm Beach.

Dr. Lisa Weise was promoted to full professor. Her work is aimed at increasing understanding, early detection and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in rural populations. She has received state and federal funding, including from the Florida Department of Health, Washington State University and the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

Coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, Dr. Beth King was promoted to full professor. King’s research focuses on mental health issues in vulnerable populations and development of prevention strategies and caring science in nursing education and practice.

Dr. Maryann Leavitt was promoted to associate professor, and she has also attained tenure. Her research focuses on leveraging patient-centered technology and nursing interventions to reduce hospital admissions and readmissions for individuals living with heart failure.

The board of the FAU/NCHA Community Health Center has voted Charles Owens to serve as a board member. Owens, a clinical coordinator of the Graduate Practice Program at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, is instrumental for facilitating clinical opportunities for the college’s students across the state.

Dr. Armiel Suriaga served as the guest speaker for the University of Alabama's Center for Substance Use Research and Related Conditions during its annual Lectureship event on April 9. His lecture, titled "Understanding the Mechanism of Drug Intoxication from Polydrug Exposures," explored the complex interactions involved in polydrug use. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session with faculty and researchers engaged in substance use research.
