Wildwood Bird Trail

May Photo Contest Winner

President’s Message:

May, the month of sunshine, blooming flowers, and endless possibilities.

                                                                                        - Unknown -

If you are taken by the idea of exploring new possibilities, Quiet Waters Park in May will be a good place to start.

To begin the exploration, you can be present when Fairies arrive in new homes in the Park. To celebrate their arrival, a festival will be held on Saturday, May 17th, beginning at 2pm in the Holly Pavilion with music, refreshments, fairy wands, and costumed celebrants. The Fairy Houses will be available for viewing all along the Holly Trail – some houses are many-tiered and welcome large fairy families, and others snuggle under a plant, shyly awaiting a solitary fairy. The houses will be visible until June 22nd when they magically become invisible! Children of all ages are invited to come visit the Fairy Houses while they are in the Park.

To celebrate their 50th Anniversary, the Annapolis Watercolor Club will hold a special exhibit from May 21 to July 6, 2025. Since this is their “Golden” Anniversary, all the paintings in the exhibit will contain the color gold, producing a golden shimmer throughout the exhibit!  This is a juried exhibition and prizes will be awarded at the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on Sunday, May 25th from 1:30 to 3:30 in the Visitor Center.

Throughout the park you may have noticed cleared areas with young plants – these are areas where invasive species have been removed and new, native plants added. Several of these areas are the result of the Watershed Stewards activities in the park last summer - the plantings are beginning to grow and become more visible. The Urban Oasis, created by Annapolis High School Baccalaureate Program students, will have a new Wayside sign and information about the benefits of native plantings.

Beginning in May the Friends will be implementing a new program called, “Native Roots Restoration.” Our goal is to remove and replace more large patches of the most challenging invasives – Chinese Privet, Bamboo, Oriental bittersweet and Wineberry. We plan to provide identification signs for the replacement plants so that you can identify appropriate plants if you want to replace invasives in your home and neighborhood gardens. The insects, birds and bees in your yard will be especially pleased by a healthier habitat and their numbers should increase!

If you are curious about what the Friends of Quiet Waters Park do and how we do it, please attend the annual Membership Meeting which will be held this year on June 9th. All members are welcome and can vote for the Board of Directors slate which will be presented in next months’ newsletter, and hear from each of the Committees about their plans for the upcoming fiscal year which begins on July 1, 2025. More details about the meeting will be in the June newsletter.

See you in the Park!

Two Art Gallery Exhibits

Current Exhibit Through May 18

Annapolis Watercolor Club

50th Anniversary Exhibit May 21 Through July 25

Continuing in the Galleries through May 18th two very different artists are on exhibit. Wendy D. Johnson is both an Artist and Art Educator. Her exhibit, in the Willow Gallery, is titled "Coastal Roots and Tranquility." Paul Gruner is in the Garden Gallery with his ceramics exhibit titled “Exploring Landscapes in Clay.”
And in order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, the Annapolis Watercolor Club (AWC) is holding a special exhibit from May 21 to July 6, 2025.  The theme of the exhibit is “gold” (50th “Golden” Anniversary) and all paintings in the exhibit will contain the color gold (metallic, metallic leaf or other golden color). The works will be juried and judged and all prizes awarded to both AWC members and guest artists who enter their work.
The Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony is on Sunday, May 25, 2025 from 1:30 to 3:30. The Galleries in the Visitor Center are opened from 9 - 4 on weekdays and 10 - 4 on weekends. Entrance to the park is $6 per vehicle. The fee is waived for the reception only.

Recap of Our Night Sky Event

The Friends held it’s first nighttime stargazing event this week with DarkSky Maryland where 30 people assembled on a magical new moon night. We heard from Tom Reinert, recently the President of DarkSky International, on how nighttime light pollution negatively affects people as well as wildlife. Four astronomers then led the group in locating constellations, planets and notable stars. DarkSky’s guidance on how to protect the night while also using outdoor lights is below.

Ranger Turner - Introducing Ranger of the Month

Ranger Turner is the newest Ranger to join the team in Quiet Waters Park, and also one of the newest ranger's in the Anne Arundel Park System. Turner was formerly at Downs Park, and most recently worked in Earleigh Heights. Turner’s education was in interpretive biology and education - combining the two is still what they enjoy doing most. During a stint in Historic Londontown Turner guided up to 3 tours a day through the heirloom gardens and at another stint, was a preschool teacher! Turner is spending the first few months in Quiet Waters Park getting oriented to the activities and pace of the Park and its operations. Welcome, Turner!

Nature Center Sundays

Join the park ranger every Sunday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm for Nature Center Sundays, a special opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors. This program allows community members to explore and learn about the park's rich environment. The parks experienced and knowledgeable rangers will be on hand to answer questions and share insights about the fascinating plants and animals that call the park home. Don't miss this chance to deepen your connection with nature and discover the wonders right in your backyard! The Nature Center is located on the second floor of the Visitor Center. $6

per car entry fee into the park applies.

May Bird Bulletin

• Spring has sprung and love is in the air! From dancing, to eating, to nest building, to singing - birds have many courtship rituals. May is the peak of the courtship season, so it is the most likely time for you to spot some of these unique behaviors right in your own yard. Keep your feeders full and your nest boxes ready – and enjoy the show!

•  Let’s go Os! Orioles return to our area and begin nesting. Be sure to have their feeders, nectar, oranges, and jelly out early. If you don’t already have our beautiful state bird visiting your yard, now is a great time to try attracting them. Orioles have a strong homing instinct that can bring them back to not only the same area, but the same tree year after year! It can take some time, patience, and consistency to get them, but it’s well worth the effort!

• Bird Bonanza! Early May is peak migration time for our area. Keep an eye out for other birds visiting/returning to the area – such as Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, Veerys, Mimic Thrushes (Mockingbirds, Catbirds, and Brown Thrashers), and Warblers (peak migration). You may notice that your Chickadees and Titmice have become scarce at feeders – don’t worry they haven’t left, they are just busy nesting and raising their young.

Join the Anne Arundel Bird Club on their monthly walk through Quiet Waters Park on paved paths through habitat that includes mature deciduous forest, wood edges, mowed fields, wetlands, and a native plant garden, along with sweeping views of the open waters of the South River and Harness Creek.

Meet at the parking lot at the end of

Quiet Waters Park Road passed the Visitor Center,

passed the amphitheater and passed the dog park
