May 2025 (No. 152)

Welcome to our newsletter. Once a month we will update you with news about David Matero Architecture and our community. We welcome your comments, questions and feedback.

Green & Healthy Maine Homes

Our in-town home, Kennebec Terrace, was featured in the latest spring issue of Green & Healthy Maine Homes. The author, June Donenfeld talked to the design and construction team and used the beautiful photos by Darren Setlow Photography, to supplement her story. Construction by Chartier Building & Remodeling. If you can't find the magazine at your local bookstore you can read the article here.

Foreside

The clients have moved in to Foreside and are still unpacking. The photographer, Bronson Guimond, was able to take photographs while we wait for landscaping to be installed later this year. The views across the meadow are spectacular, and the large triple-glazed openings help bring the outside in (climate controlled, of course). Stay tuned for final photos next year! Construction by Downeast Design Build.

New Building and Energy code

After a couple years of MUBEC meetings and TAG meetings, and as of April 7, Maine has officially adopted an updated energy and building code. The entire state is now using the 2021 versions of the ICC code family (including residential, commercial, and energy codes). David is AIA Maine's representative on the MUBEC board and continues to meet regularly as code items come up across the state.

The Gables

The arched ceiling of the entertainment room has taken shape at The Gables in China. Sitting above the antique car collection, this room will have views out towards the meadow, as well as a barn we designed for another client. The great room will open to a patio with outdoor kitchen and pool. The double thick, staggered stud wall system and triple glazed openings will make this a very comfortable and energy efficient home. Construction by Zach Cioppa Construction.

Cliff Cottage Part 2

Grading around Cliff Cottage is complete, along with a stone wall and steps that lead towards the water. Now that phase 2 (phase 1 photos here) is almost finished, the facelift is quite a transition highlighted by a cathedral ceiling kitchen and dining room. Construction by Chartier Building & Remodeling.

Indoor Champions

I told you about David's virtual hole-in-one last month, and this month I get to tell you that David and Tom won the two-man best ball indoor golf championship at the Bath Golf Club. If the rain ever stops they will begin to play outside. Also, congratulations to Tom for finally being in the DMA newsletter. Tom, dreams do come true!

On the Drawing Board

A very small buildable area along the Kennebec River in Bath is solved by breaking this house into three main parts connected by green (meaning actual plantings) roofs. These blocks each have different views of the water and a level of privacy towards the public road.
