The Work of Building Community
May has been one of those months that reminds us just how many different conversations, partnerships, and moving pieces are involved in building a stronger Fondren.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve spent time with neighborhood leadership from across Ward 7, continued work on the Bottle Tree Garden Tour, met with partners on branding, photography, website development, and district identity, and continued advancing the work of the Fondren Community Development Corporation — including conversations around mission, vision, and organizational structure.
We’ve also continued important coordination with residents, stakeholders, and public partners through meetings like the OFNA quarterly gathering, ongoing work related to landscape and signage improvements, and conversations with Jackson’s new police chief and new Foundation board leadership.
One thing that becomes increasingly clear in all of these discussions is that Fondren’s future will not be shaped by any single project or organization. It will come from sustained collaboration — residents, institutions, businesses, nonprofits, developers, neighborhood leaders, and community partners all working toward a shared vision for thoughtful growth.
That momentum was underscored again this month with the announcement of an historic $2 million gift from Trustmark Bank to the University of Mississippi Medical Center Cancer Center and Research Institute. With that future facility located just blocks from one of the Foundation’s CDC focus areas, the connections between neighborhood vitality, healthcare investment, and economic opportunity continue to become more visible.
Fondren remains a place where big ideas and everyday community life intersect — and where the work of building community happens one conversation, one partnership, and one project at a time.
