The Jefferson Street Farmers Market Kicks Off 2026 Season This Thursday

Downtown Burlington is about to come alive with fresh produce, local flavors, handmade goods, and community spirit as the Jefferson Street Farmers Market kicks off its 2026 season this Thursday, May 7, from 4:30 to 7 PM.


Organized by Downtown Partners, Inc., the Jefferson Street Farmers Market is one of Southeast Iowa’s favorite weekly traditions, bringing together local farmers, food vendors, artisans, and shoppers in the heart of Downtown Burlington every Thursday through September 24.


Marketgoers can expect a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, honey, handmade crafts, flowers, prepared foods, and family-friendly activities. With the street closed to traffic, shoppers are free to stroll, explore, and enjoy an evening filled with local flavor and fun.

Each week, marketgoers can shop for fresh produce and handmade goods while enjoying performances from talented local musicians. Featured artists throughout the season include Jared Rouggly, Diane DeJaynes, Ruby Orr, Lillian Chavez, and more, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of downtown.


More than just a market, this weekly event continues to serve as a gathering place where friends connect, families explore, and visitors experience the charm of Downtown Burlington. The addition of live music enhances the experience, turning Thursday evenings into a celebration of community, creativity, and local flavor.

This event offers an opportunity to step inside the studio, meet the owner, and explore the range of services available, including massage, skincare, and holistic wellness offerings. Guests can enjoy a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere while learning more about how Lucid Lotus supports health and well-being in the community.


Attendees will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a free 60-minute massage. Whether visiting for the first time or returning, this open house is a chance to connect, explore, and celebrate the continued growth of a local downtown business.

Doors open at 9 AM and remain open until 6 PM, giving visitors plenty of time to browse and find their next great read. Quantities are limited, so early shopping is encouraged.

Comedy Thursday Finale Brings Big Names to the Stage

Comedy Thursday wraps up its 2025–2026 season with a high-energy finale at Memorial Auditorium.


Headlining the night are comedians Costaki Economopoulos, Greg Hahn, and Bob Zany, who will take the stage together to honor their friend Ron Sexton for one unforgettable evening of comedy.

Attendees can also enhance their experience with an exclusive meet and greet opportunity, available as an add-on with the purchase of a valid show ticket.



This special finale promises a night of laughter, camaraderie, and a memorable close to the Comedy Thursday season in Downtown Burlington.

Let's Make Downtown Bloom

May 11


Community members are invited to help bring color and vibrancy to Downtown Burlington during the annual Downtown Flower Planting on Monday, May 11 at 4:30 PM.


Volunteers will meet at Nancy Neafie Park, located at the corner of 6th and Jefferson, to assist with planting flowers throughout the district.


Participants are encouraged to bring gloves, trowels, and a willingness to get involved in this hands-on community effort.

This annual tradition plays an important role in enhancing the beauty of downtown and creating a welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike. The effort is made possible with the support of Zaiser’s Landscaping, Florist & Greenhouse, who generously provide the flowers.


All are welcome to participate and help make Downtown Burlington bloom.

History Club Brings Local Stories to Life Each Week

Wednesdays


Community members are invited to take a step back in time each week with the History Club, held every Wednesday at the Des Moines County Historical Society.


This free, informal gathering meets in the Bart Howard Lounge and is led by Executive Director Colton Overton. The club offers a welcoming space to explore local history, share memories, and uncover unique stories that have shaped the Burlington community.


Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas, topics, or questions, or simply come ready to follow where curiosity leads. Each session offers something a little different, making it a great opportunity for both longtime residents and those new to the area to learn more about the region’s rich history.


The History Club continues to be a meaningful way to connect with the past while building community in Downtown Burlington.

Zion First Mental Health & Wellness Fair

May 16


The Zion Mental Health and Wellness Fair will take place on Jefferson Street in Downtown Burlington on May 16 from 10 AM to 1 PM.


This free community event invites participants to focus on overall well-being with access to mental health professionals, fitness and wellness education, health screenings, nutrition resources, and spiritual and emotional support. Local vendors and organizations will also be on site, offering tools and connections to help individuals take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.


Following the fair, the Zion Pet Ministry will host a Blessing of the Pets ceremony at 1 PM at Nancy Neafie Park. Community members are welcome to attend one or both events as part of a day centered on health, connection, and well-being.

Great Pages Circus Comes to Memorial Auditorium


The Great Pages Circus brings big-top excitement to Memorial Auditorium on May 16 and 17.


Audiences can expect a full lineup of classic circus entertainment, including aerial acrobatics, skilled juggling, and plenty of clown-filled comedy. The show also features appearances by the Pages Liberty Ponies, along with horses and even camels, adding to the traditional circus experience.



With multiple showtimes across both days and family-friendly pricing, the Great Pages Circus offers an accessible and memorable outing for all ages. It is a chance to step into a world of wonder and enjoy a timeless form of entertainment along the Mississippi Riverfront.

Snake Alley Criterium Returns to Downtown Burlington

May 22-23


Downtown Burlington will once again welcome cyclists and spectators for the annual Snake Alley Criterium on May 22 and 23.


This two-day event draws competitive racers from across the country, all eager to take on one of the most challenging courses in the Midwest. The weekend begins Friday evening with the high-energy Friday Night Fever twilight races, setting the stage for a full day of competition on Saturday.


Saturday’s races feature the iconic climb up Snake Alley, testing endurance, speed, and skill on the historic brick roadway. Younger riders will have their chance to participate in the Kid’s Race, while the crowd-favorite Cobble Climb invites participants to tackle the steep and winding Cobblestone Alley.


Known for its intensity and unique course, the Snake Alley Criterium continues to build on its national reputation as a must-experience cycling event. Spectators are encouraged to line the streets, cheer on the riders, and take in one of Downtown Burlington’s most exciting traditions.

Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast

May 23


Start your Snake Alley Criterium Saturday with a stack of fresh, hot pancakes, sausage and coffee! The Burlington Kiwanis Club will host its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Port of Burlington on Saturday, May 23, from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM.


A long-standing community favorite, the breakfast is a perfect way to fuel up before heading downtown to catch the action of the Annual Snake Alley Criterium. Guests can enjoy a hearty meal of pancakes, sausage, and drinks, all while supporting Kiwanis programs that benefit youth and families in the Burlington area.


Whether you're a cyclist, a spectator, or just in the mood for a great breakfast with a view of the river, the Port of Burlington is the place to be that morning.
