Fraudulent QR Codes on Parking Machines

The City became aware of fraudulent QR code stickers appearing on parking Pay and Display machines in Downtown Mississauga. City staff removed fraudulent QR code stickers from parking machines after becoming aware of the scam. These unauthorized QR codes are designed to redirect users to third-party payment sites that are not affiliated with the City. Scanning and using these codes put your personal and financial information at risk. Similar scams have been reported in cities across Canada like in Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

In Mississauga, QR codes stickers posted on parking machines are never used to collect payment for parking. Parking and payment instructions can be found on the parking machine digital screen or on surrounding official City signage. The only way to pay for City parking is through parking machines using the digital payment prompts, where certain payment options are accepted like coins, payment apps like Apple Pay or Google Wallet or major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) at all locations. Any QR code found on a City paid parking machine is not legitimate and should not be scanned. Learn more here.

Fraud Alert: Roofing Scam

Police are warning of an ongoing roofing fraud and impersonation scam in Toronto where fraudulent contractors allegedly offer repair work to a victim’s home, continually find urgent issues, and, in some cases, send in an Interpol investigator claiming the contracting company is under investigation in an effort to obtain more money from them.

Toronto police indicate the scam starts with suspects visiting a home and identifying alleged problems with the roof, chimney or exterior structure, and offering repair services. In some cases, victims have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for work that was not needed. Police urge residents to be wary of unsolicited contractors identifying urgent repair issues with their home, and to always seek several independent quotes before signing on to any sort of work. Police are asking anyone with information about this ongoing scam to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously. For helpful information on common frauds and scams, as well as other resources regarding fraud prevention visit Peel Police’s Fraud and Scams page
