Unless the Lord Builds the House
Families of all sizes and shapes are important to God. He created the whole idea of family, and He makes a pretty big deal about it in His Word. He addresses families specifically and gives very clear directions about how to live life out in a family.
Have you really studied what the Bible says about singleness, marriage, parenting, grandparenting? The world is telling us one thing. Our backgrounds and traditions are telling us another thing. The most important thing is hearing what God says.
During the months of May and June, we will focus on specific passages of Scripture that give us God’s perspective on the family. It’s important that we try to clear away all the chatter/confusion and all the ways people try to define and describe what God has already spoken about. And even if all the categories don’t fit your particular stage and phase of life, we should care about all our brothers and sisters and how we can encourage them biblically in the assignments God has given them.

The series title is “Unless The Lord Builds The House.” The Scripture memory text will be Psalm 127:1a,3-5a, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain . . . Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them . . .”
It would be great to memorize all five verses of Psalm 127, but we’ll focus on the above portion as a congregation. Work on it during your family devotions. Write it on a notecard, and carry it around. We should live, disciple, encourage, and counsel from God’s perspective, which includes Psalm 127.
So much depends on the family. Healthy families typically indicate a healthy church. Healthy families usually say the culture/society in general is flourishing as well. It makes sense we would want to know what the Bible actually teaches. Lawndale is a biblical church; may the Lord use our focus on His Word to call us all to repentance and obedience.

Fall Retreat 2026—We'll see you at the coast! The Lawndale Young Adults class is planning their annual Fall Retreat at Fort Caswell in Oak Island, NC over Labor Day weekend. Space is limited. A word of encouragement: The times of “rest” are part of God’s design for our lives.
“There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it. In our whole life, the music is broken off here and there by "rests," and we foolishly think we have come to the end of the tune. God sends a time of forced leisure, sickness, disappointed plans, frustrated efforts, and makes a sudden pause in the choral hymn of our lives, and we lament that our voices must be silent, and our part missing in the music which ever goes up to the ear of the Creator. How does the musician read the rest? See him beat the time with unvarying count, and catch up the next note true and steady, as if no breaking place had come between. Not without design does God write the music of our lives. But be it ours to learn the tune and not be dismayed at the "rests." They are not to be slurred over nor to be omitted, nor to destroy the melody, nor to change the keynote. If we look up, God Himself will beat the time for us. Prime Time in May—Join us in the CLC at noon on May 21 for our monthly Prime Time Fellowship. The menu this month will be hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, slaw, dessert, and tea/water/coffee. Apsara & Jaya Koneswaran will play the piano and harp for our enjoyment. Bring a friend. It is a good way to introduce them to Lawndale. We need a head count for the food and seating, so please RSVP by calling the church office before 5 pm on May 14. A $5 donation at the door is appreciated. We look forward to seeing you.
Life Groups—Sometimes a church our size can be a bit overwhelming. That is where Life Groups at 9:15 am on Sunday mornings come in. Friendships, personal care, prayer, good conversion, fellowship, and a small group Bible Study can go a long way to finding a place where you can feel more comfortable. Baptist Children’s Home Food Roundup in April—Complete; thank you for your donations!
Hurricane Relief Mission Trip, May 18-21—Volunteers are needed to help clean, paint, and do minor building repairs in Boone. There is no cost for this trip, but you must supply your own transportation. Contact Jimmy Jackson by May 1 for specific details and to volunteer.
May the Course: Race for Restoration Place Counseling—You are invited to join us for the seventh annual May the Course Be with You, a “Star Wars” themed 5K/10K and Mental Health Mile on Saturday, May 2. You can expect a great race with a variety of runners in costumes and other galactic goodness! All proceeds will support Restoration Place Counseling.
National Day of Prayer—On Thursday, May 7 from 12-1 pm in the Chapel, let’s pray for God’s redemptive and transforming work in all areas of our nation. This year’s theme is Hope (Romans 15:13). Pick up a prayer guide/bookmark in the lobby.
Walk for Life—Join us at Greensboro’s LeBauer Park on May 9 as we come alongside our ministry partner, The Pregnancy Network, to celebrate empowering women to face their unplanned pregnancies without fear. The Walk for Life is a family-friendly event with a short program (beginning at 9:55 am), a stroller-friendly 2-mile walk (beginning at 10:15 am), and kid's activities. You can register in advance on Church Center or on The Pregnancy Network’s website.
Baby Bottle Drive for The Pregnancy Network—Help the mission of The Pregnancy Network from this Mother’s Day (May 10) through Father’s Day (June 14) with our annual Baby Bottle Drive. We will have baby bottles available in the lobby starting on Mother’s Day that you can take home, fill with cash, spare change or checks, and return to the lobby. Thanks for your support of this great mission partner!
Colombia Mission Trip—Volunteer from September 13-19 to minister to native people. Contact Jimmy Jackson for details (cost TBD).
Lilies of the Field (clothing outreach)—We are currently requesting the following donations for spring: adult casual plus sizes (sizes 1X - 3X), adult and children’s shoes, hoodies for all ages and sizes. Please place new or gently used donated items (bags of 20 lb or less) in the bins behind House B.
Shepherd’s Shelf (food pantry)—Shepherd's Shelf is offering hamburger helper for the May item of the month. The church will provide the ground beef. Would you provide the Hamburger Helper and some sweet treats? The items can be found at local grocery stores. We purchased our items at Food Lion for about $8.

- 1 box (14.4 oz) honey or cinnamon graham crackers OR 1 box 12 oz box vanilla wafers

NC Baptists Women’s Conference—Save the date for September 19! Again, Lawndale will host this year’s statewide conference from 9 am (doors open at 8 am) until 3:30 pm. The theme is “Seated and Sent” and includes a special track for high school girls. Register this month on Church Center for the $20 early bird ticket that includes materials, snacks, and lunch. After May 31, the ticket price will increase to $30.
Women’s Ministry—The monthly meeting will be May 3 at 4 pm in the Chapel. Join us for a time of worship, instruction and discussion. In May and June our focus will be on Hermeneutics, learning the principles and methods of interpreting the text of the Bible. Childcare provided.

Ladies’ Wednesday Morning Study—There will be no study on May 6, but all ladies are welcome to attend the new series that will take place the last three Wednesdays in May at 9 am in the Chapel. Dr. Donna Navey will teach “Peace of God” on May 13, 20 and 27.

This month, we will sing a new song together titled "My Worth is Not in What I Own." The chorus says:
I rejoice in my Redeemer, Greatest Treasure, Wellspring of my soul
And I will trust in Him, no other; my soul is satisfied in Him alone!
As we continue to gather together as God's people, may we proclaim His goodness, His all-satisfying person, and His all-sufficient merit together!
We also have an opportunity to worship this month with our Voices of Experience (VOE) choir. On Sunday, May 31 at 5 pm, VOE will lead us in "Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs." This evening of worship is focused around Colossians 3:16. Please come that evening and worship through singing with us!

It is really hard to believe another school year is coming so close to the end. The warm weather is finally here and the children are excited about the opportunity to be outside. They are all busy learning about spring as well as celebrating mothers this month. Our last day of school will be Friday, May 22.
We still have a few spaces left for the fall. If you know of anyone looking for a Christian preschool for their child ages 10 months through kindergarten, please have them come by or call (336) 282-4177. Registration forms are available online as well as outside my office in the children’s wing.
Several preschool families were blessed through the Weekday Scholarship Fund this school year. I am so very thankful for all of the donations that allowed us to help parents provide a safe Christian school for their children. Please prayerfully consider donating to the Marion and Doris Ellis Weekday Scholarship Fund so that we can continue blessing families through this ministry.

National Day of Prayer—The Chapel will be open for prayer May 7 between noon and 1 pm. This year’s focus is the theme “Glorify God Among the Nations Seeking Him in All Generations.”
Graduate Commissioning Sunday—High School and College Graduates who registered will be recognized May 17 during the worship service.
Life at Lawndale Membership Class—For anyone interested in joining the church, the next membership class will be May 17 at 4 pm in Guest Central. Childcare will be available by request. Registration is online.
Sunday Flower Arrangements—Provide flowers for the church lobby on a Sunday of your choice in honor or memory of someone. Arrangements are $125 and can be taken home the Sunday after the service. Look for the signup sheet on the 2nd floor elevator lobby. Be sure to provide your contact information so a staff member can contact you prior to your Sunday to get the wording for your flower card.
Shepherd's Shelf—Shepherd's Shelf is looking for YOU, the person who loves to listen to and pray with those in need. It's rewarding, a blessing for you and the one in need.
