As we age, nearly everyone needs additional help, whether that’s with medical care, socialization or just simple household help. This journey to additional support is one of the most complex transitions in life, often involving both older adults and their families.
During these transition periods, individuals face critical questions about planning ahead for long-term care: When to seek help, whether they should decide for themselves or rely on the assessment of others and how to choose from the vast landscape of available options. Navigating this continuum of care, from assessment of needs to selecting a provider, can be difficult and involves decision-making at every turn.
To better understand how people make those decisions about senior care, U.S. News surveyed 203 independent seniors currently living on their own but thinking about future care plans, as well as 208 family members whose loved one had an increasing need for additional care. Below are the results of that survey, as well as expert advice on navigating these decisions.
