Hot Topic - HEALTH CARE un-covered: Profiteering in Big Health Insurance
| |
Join us on Friday, May 15, 2026, Noon to 1:00 PM via Zoom for a Hot Topic featuring Joey Rettino, whose work sits at the intersection of journalism, advocacy and research.
Joey Rettino is the Managing Editor of HEALTH CARE un-covered and a cohost of the HEALTH CARE un-covered Show, a video podcast unpacking the forces behind America’s health care system. He will share how health insurers became Wall Street giants—devouring the health care system and reshaping Washington in the process. And why there is hope for something better.
In 2025, he co-led production of The Sunlight Report on UnitedHealth Group, a first-of-its-kind analysis mapping nearly 2,700 acquisitions and subsidiaries behind the largest health care conglomerate in the world. This year, he helped produce the Health Insurance Influence Tracker, the first campaign contribution tracker focused on the health insurance lobby.
The event is FREE but to receive the Zoom Link and to Submit Questions Registration is required CLICK HERE.

Our 2026 League of Women Voters of Central Delaware County (LWVCDC) Annual Meeting is Wednesday, June 10 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Haverford Township Free Library, 1601 Darby Road, Havertown, PA 19083. A light supper will be catered by DiFabio's Restaurant in Media.
This is a FREE Member ONLY event but registration is required. It is one of only two in-person League events we hold each year so we urge our many new members to come out and meet us and each other.
LWVCDC will be awarding the Outstanding Community Service award to The Delaware County Board of Elections, currently made up of Ashley Lunkenheimer (Chair), Scott Alberts, and John C. McMeekin II, for the Board's exemplary bipartisan work from 2020 until now, seeing voters through the adoption of new machines with verifiable paper ballots and no-excuse mail-in voting, the 2020 COVID epidemic and consolidation of underused, small precincts this year, saving taxpayers substantial money.

| | Adoption of 2026 Fiscal Year Budget | | |
The budget looks a lot smaller than in previous years for Fiscal Year 2027 because it is the first full year in the new LWVUS membership system. In prior years, CDC collected the total amount of membership dues, then paid the National, State, and County per member payments (PMP) a year after the close of the FY in which the dues payments were collected. This made the total budget seem much larger in past years due to carryover of revenue due to LWVUS, PALWV and Delaware County ILO.

| | Adoption of Local Program | | |
The local program is a set of goals for 2026-2027 to carry out our work on the positions of the state and national LWV as they relate to our local League. The goal is to develop committees to address and work on local program initiatives with the intent to become more active and involved in all the communities we serve. Our work is guided by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policy of the LWVUS using our DEI Lens.
Changes and additions to last year's local program are in purple type. For the full local program Click HERE.

| | Adoption of Bylaw Changes | | |
Our Bylaws define how the organization functions, including officer roles, voting procedures, and director elections, etc. From time to time bylaws need to be updated and involve a structured process of reviewing, proposing changes, and voting, to maintain legal compliance, adapt to organizational growth, and reflect current operational practices. For 2026 our Bylaws Committee and our Board of Directors are proposing three changes to our current bylaws. Two changes are under ARTICLE IV Officers and one change is under Purposes & Policy (ARTICLE II, Section 1).

One year ago, in the Spring of 2025, the League of Women Voters declared that the U.S. was in a "Constitutional Crisis" and launched the Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative to engage and mobilize 8.5 million voters to protect and preserve our democracy.
LWV CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn released the following statement in the Spring of 2025: “From the flagrant disregard for congressional authority and governmental checks and balances to defying Supreme Court orders ... one thing is abundantly clear: our country is in a constitutional crisis. We the people must fight back.”
Unite & Rise 8.5 is backed by research that shows movements with strong civic engagement—and sustained nonviolent action—are the most effective path to lasting change. You, our members, are laying that foundation with every march, every meeting, and every mobilization.
Members of our LWV participate in support of Unite & Rise by:
- Marching for our constitutional rights
- Gathering at peaceful rallies
- Protesting for the rights of immigrants
- Holding voting rights vigil
- Sharing voter information
- Giving speeches and presentations about LWV issues
- Forming coalitions with other nonpartisan organizations
- Observing government meetings
- Being an Election Hero (poll worker or watcher)
- Tracking legislation that impacts voters
- Contacting our elected officials to demand good governance
- Taking action to stop voter suppression

By Jodine Mayberry
Legislative Advocate
People keep asking me is the SAVE Act—or its new, not much better version, the SAVE America Act—dead. According to news reports, it's not exactly dead but it might as well be.
The U.S. House did pass the SAVE America Act bill, but the Republican-controlled Senate has simply not brought it to the floor. They have 50 votes for its passage, but they need 60 under the Senate's filibuster rules and the Democratic minority of 49 is holding firm (maybe except for Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman) in its resolve to vote against it. Unless the Republicans do away with the filibuster, which they are loathe to do despite President Donald J. Trump's urging, they cannot pass the bill.
Moreover, the logistics just don't work. The bill requires voters to present a birth certificate or passport at registration, does away with most mail-in voting and requires everyone to show a government-issued photo ID when voting. Even if the bill passed tomorrow, it would be impossible for state and county election boards to implement those requirements before the mid-terms in November, especially without a lot of financial help from the federal government that they are no longer getting (See Video of the Month below). In addition, implementation would likely be stalled by numerous court challenges from most of the states.
