~~~Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd~~~
Happenings at Lord of Life Lutheran Church
"Where Everybody is Somebody...and Jesus is Lord!"
|
|
"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability."
From The Pastor's Desk...
Pentecost and Confirmation...
Sunday, May 23rd begins another season of celebrations. From our three confirmands, Mason, Graceanna, and Vivian, affirming their baptism, to Memorial Day and awareness of sacrifices past and future, to June 13th, honoring our graduates, to Father-Brother-Son-Friend day, there is much in the life of this community to give us pause.
As we pause, we look for what God has done and how we can join in with what God will do. This pause is essential, because in it we look to God rather than our own plans, or fears, or expectations. When we look to God, there will be wisdom, and love, and surprises! And how privileged we are to not only see into God's will, but to be able to put our hands and hearts into the effort of bringing God's will - which is God's love - into our community and world.
We begin with Pentecost, with seeing Mason, Graceanna, and Vivian pause to honor God and name their place amongst us. Witnessing this, we open to this season of further celebrations of God with us. Blessings abound!
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn
MORE May Happenings At
The Grace Place
The Grace Place children have been reviewing the letters: K, X, and Z. They are practicing handwriting skills, creating craft projects, dancing and singing at Circle Time, playing math games, and working on phonics (Fundations). The children planted Zinnia seeds, and they are starting to grow into beautiful flowers!
All of the classes released their butterflies and it was exciting to watch! They are learning about the "Life Cycle Of A Frog," and continuing to explore interesting facts about reptiles and amphibians. The teachers are reading stories, and for Friday enrichment, the children participated in a fun Coding activity.
To finish out the month, and for Memorial Day, all of the classes will be making a special art project and cards. We honor those who have served or who are serving now.
Diversity Discussion Group,
Thursday, May 27th At 1:00 PM
Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, May 27th at 1:00 PM. Pastor Wendolyn, Erin Gordon, and Sandy O'Neal will lead the discussion which will include items from the recent NJ Synod Assembly.
Pastor will present the "Bishop's Challenge", which centers around the story of Pastor Jehu Jones, the first ordained Black Lutheran Pastor in the USA. You can receive more information by texting: CHALLENGE to 52886.
Essentially, his story is one of many untold stories that invite us to see racist actions in the past where whites either used their power to harm the ministry and working conditions of Black pastors, or refused to use their voices/resources to help these Black pastors when they were asked. As we hear such stories that are new to us, we are likely to see patterns from the past and seek ways that we, today, can avoid such patterns. The Bishop's Challenge is a way that all people are invited to use their power and resources to create new ways of being Church together - equal, inclusive, honest, and engaged in mutual growth.
Appalachia Service Project
(A Message From Penny Miller)
Appalachia Service Project is a volunteer organization based in Virginia. They also have offices in North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Their moto is to make homes warmer, drier and safer. Their selfless work is completed by volunteers from visiting churches.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to join Hope Lutheran Church from Iowa, for a week-long adult mission trip. Our tasks included a remodel of a bathroom, replacing sheet rock, hanging vinyl siding, and interior painting. While working in the home, we had the privilege of getting to know the family and their struggles. We had lunch with them each day, played with their children, worked side by side with them really getting to know them. It was a very rich and rewarding week.
Last year all trips were cancelled due to Covid. Recently, I received an email asking if there was some interest in putting a group together to volunteer in October. We could join the members of Hope Lutheran. The work week would be Sunday through Thursday (Which week is to be determined.).
If you are interested in this adventure, or have any questions, please contact me by phone (609-726-1698) or email (driven2sew@hotmail.com).
A Message About
The Need And Safety
Of The Covid-19 Vaccinations
(From Lord Of Life Church Member
Dr. Alan Dennison)
Why is it so important to get the vaccine for Covid-19? We all have seen news reports about "vaccine hesitancy" and chances are we may know someone who has doubts about the Covid-19 shot. We all have memories growing up of having many vaccinations without any serious side effects. These older vaccines took years to test and get approved. So now it seems to many that the Covid vaccine was developed and tested in record time and this newness has caused some to hesitate.
The FDA has currently authorized 3 vaccines for Covid-19 for emergency use. Two of these vaccines, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines utilize a new technology using messenger RNA. The technology and research to develop these two vaccines has however been going on for decades. Messenger RNA is a genetic substance that directs our cells to make a specific protein. In the case of the Covid virus the synthetic mRNA in the vaccine directs our cells to make a protein that is found on the outer surface of the virus (spike protein). Our immune system recognizes this protein as foreign and mounts a defense against it by producing antibodies. If the antibodies later encounter the actual virus, they will protect you from getting ill. These vaccines cannot change your DNA nor do they direct our cells to make the actual virus.
The third vaccine available is the Johnson and Johnson one shot vaccine. The J and J vaccine uses a weakened version of a common cold virus to carry into our cells a small amount of genetic material that codes for a piece of the novel coronavirus. The cold virus can enter our cells but it has been altered so that it cannot replicate nor can it make people sick. The virus does however trick our cells into making pieces of the coronavirus spike protein. Our immune system recognizes this as a foreign material and creates protection against it. The antibodies produced will protect you if you are exposed to the actual virus.
So why should I get a vaccine?
- The vaccines are safe and effective
- The vaccine may prevent you and those around you from getting seriously ill or dying from covid-19.
- Getting immunized will increase the number of people in the community who are protected making it harder for the virus to spread and mutate. This will contribute to herd immunity.
- Immunization is an important tool to help stop the pandemic. Vaccines are a safe way to build protection. None of the vaccines will make you ill with Covid-19.
- You can start doing more once you are fully vaccinated.
Do not hesitate to talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about whether or not you should receive a vaccine.
