Marubeni and ExxonMobil’s low-carbon ammonia deal marks a major step in unleashing a new energy supply

ExxonMobil | May 7, 2025

Marubeni Corporation and ExxonMobil have entered into a long-term offtake agreement for approximately 250,000 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia per year from ExxonMobil’s planned facility in Baytown, Texas. The project is designed to produce virtually carbon-free hydrogen, removing approximately 98% of CO₂ emissions, which will then be converted to low-carbon ammonia.

The ammonia will primarily be supplied to Kobe Power Plant, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kobe Steel, Ltd. In addition to the supply agreement, Marubeni will acquire an equity stake in the Baytown facility, strengthening its role in the global low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia value chain.

Modcon – Hydrogen Utilization in Gas Power Stations through Real-Time Fuel Control

Hydrogen Central| May 14, 2025

As the global energy industry advances toward a low-carbon future, hydrogen has emerged as a key enabler for decarbonization, especially when utilized within existing infrastructure. One of the most pragmatic and scalable approaches is blending hydrogen into natural gas streams for combustion in gas turbine power stations. This method allows for immediate emission reductions, leverages existing pipeline and turbine infrastructure, and provides a transitional pathway to fully renewable hydrogen use in the future.

France proposes a 1.5% hydrogen fuel by 2030 mandate

H2 View | May 14, 2025

The French Government has launched a consultation on a mandate that would see clean hydrogen meet 1.5% of transport fuel by 2030, with penalties for non-compliance.

The ecological transition ministry has proposed a mechanism that sets specific quotas for fuel suppliers in an aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across transport sectors between 2026 and 2035.

From 2026, France would require green hydrogen, in line with the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) rules, to meet 0.1% of fuel demand in 2026, ramping up annually to 2% by 2035.

Dubbed the Incentive for the Reduction of Carbon Intensity of Fuels (IRICC), the measure will replace the existing TIRUERT system, which provides tax incentives by allowing charging and hydrogen refuelling station developers to issue renewable energy certificates.

China Unveils First Demonstration Project for Million-Cubic-Meter Salt Cavern Hydrogen Storage

FuelCellsWorks | May 21, 2025

The awarding ceremony for a major hydrogen storage initiative — the salt cavern hydrogen storage demonstration project and the million-cubic-meter hydrogen storage demonstration project — was held at Ye County, central China's Henan Province, on Monday.

According to a representative from China Pingmei Shenma group, construction of the demonstration project, located in the company's high-quality salt field, began in November 2024. It marks the commencement of Asia's first large-scale deep underground salt cavern project for hydrogen storage, with a planned capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters.

EU Awards Over $1 Billion to Renewable Hydrogen Production Projects

ESG Today | May 21, 2025

The European Commission announced that it has selected 15 projects across the European Economic Area (EEA) to receive €992 million (USD$1.1 billion) in funding to produce renewable hydrogen, a key element of efforts to decarbonize heavy industry and transport. According to the Commission, the projects, located across Germany, Spain, Finland, Norway and the Netherlands, are expected to produce nearly 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over ten years, avoiding more than 15 million tonnes of C02 emissions.

Hydrogen is viewed as one of the key building blocks of the transition to a cleaner energy future, particularly for industrial and transport sectors with difficult to abate emissions, in which renewable energy solutions such as wind or solar are less practical.

Air Products Supplies Liquid Hydrogen to Superyacht

FuelCellsWorks | May 21, 2025

Air Products, a hydrogen supplier and provider of industrial gases, has supplied liquid hydrogen to the first hydrogen fuel cell superyacht, Breakthrough. This achievement marks a significant step forward in sustainable maritime innovation, proving that hydrogen is ready to play a central role in the future of marine transportation.

Built by renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship, Breakthrough is the first vessel of its kind to integrate a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell system, offering a combustion-free method of generating electricity with only water as a byproduct. Air Products, leveraging its expertise in supplying hydrogen to industrial applications, aerospace, heavy-duty transport, and maritime, is proud to contribute to this project and accelerate the shipping industry’s transition to cleaner energy.

GeoPura: how its green hydrogen generators are taking on diesel

The UK Times | May 21, 2025

Andrew Cunningham has it in for diesel generators. “No one knows for sure, but it is estimated that there is a $300 billion installed estate of diesel generators [globally],” says the serial entrepreneur.

Developed economies are just as hooked on them as developing ones are, he adds, before anyone says they provide affordable power in poor countries. “It is pretty horrible,” he says. Fortunately, Cunningham, 61, has spent the last 17 years or so developing an alternative generator that is quiet, reliable, spews out water from their exhausts rather than toxic fumes, and is made at the famous Parsons Works in Newcastle, the birthplace of the steam turbine.

Energy Department Slashes 47 Burdensome and Costly Regulations, Delivering First Milestone in America’s Biggest Deregulatory Effort

Energy.gov | May 12, 2025

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the first step in the Energy Department’s largest deregulatory effort in history, proposing the elimination or reduction of 47 regulations that are driving up costs and lowering the quality of life for the American people. Once finalized, these actions will save the American people an estimated $11 billion and cut more than 125,000 words from the Code of Federal Regulations. These actions, by President Donald Trump’s Executive Order, “Zero-Based Regulation to Unleash American Energy,” advance President Trump’s promise to restore consumer freedom, lower costs, and unleash American energy dominance.

"The OFCHC is presenting this for your consideration, remaining neutral on its merits."

Adani Launches India's First Hydrogen-Powered Truck

Cartoq | May 18, 2025

It’s designed for use in Adani’s mining operations, and while it won’t be seen on highways anytime soon, it has already sparked a bigger question: Could hydrogen be the answer to the future of commercial transportation?

Let’s take a closer look at why this matters and whether hydrogen trucks could truly change how goods move across the country.

Why Hydrogen, and Why Now? Heavy commercial vehicles are among the hardest to decarbonise. Diesel still dominates the segment, not just because of availability, but because it's tough to find an alternative that offers the same range, refuelling speed, and load-bearing capacity. Battery-electric trucks, while promising for shorter urban delivery use, often struggle when scaled up to haul tonnes of material over hundreds of kilometres.
