Midtown Official Plan Amendment

Council passes motion intended to assess accuracy of conflicting calculations of build out population in Midtown | |

Council passed a motion to refer the OPA to a Special Committee of the Whole of Council to assess the accuracy of conflicting calculations of build out population in Midtown and identify population shares and best practices for the development of growth nodes.
This comes following Council receiving a staff report highlighting how sufficient growth in Midtown Oakville is required for the town's urban structure to achieve its intended goals.
According to the staff report, Midtown Oakville is being planned and designed to become an urban, transit-oriented community and destination for residents and visitors, designed with a compact urban form, complete with tall and mid-rise buildings framing a pedestrian-oriented public realm that prioritizes walking, active transportation, and transit use.
The report also suggests that Midtown is to be a complete community where people can live, work, and play in walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods.
"I thank Council and the public for the most constructive meeting I can remember in a long time," Mayor Burton said in conclusion to the meeting.

Council endorses new
Strategic Plan direction

On May 17, 2023, Town Council endorsed the key elements of a new Strategic Plan being developed to guide Council’s decision making over the next four years, and what the community envisions for its future.
The key elements include:
- the town’s new long-term vision: a vibrant and livable community for all;
- mission: serving the community in a responsible, inclusive way, dedicated to building economic, social, and environmental sustainability;
- guiding principles: leadership, inclusivity, excellence, sustainability, quality of life, fiscal responsibility;
- strategic priorities: growth management, community belonging, environmental sustainability and accountable government;
- and objectives under each strategic priority.

We are also closing in on what actions Council and town staff will focus on this term that will advance our vibrant community and help set a path for success for generations to come.”

Oakville receives federal funding for accessibility improvements
to Wedgewood Pool

Renovations to make Wedgewood Pool more accessible will begin this fall thanks to $100,000 in funding the Town of Oakville received in part from the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund.
The purpose of the fund is to make Canadian communities more accessible for persons with disabilities to take part in community activities, programs and services.

Today Mayor Crombie announced that she has formed an exploratory committee to look into a leadership bid for the Ontario Liberal Party.
Mayor Crombie is also the current Chair of OBCM, a non-partisan organization comprised of mayors of Ontario cities with populations of 100,000 or more. OBCM provides a voice for big city mayors in policy debates that impact Ontario cities.
Through policy development, advocacy, discussion and partnerships, OBCM supports strong and effective cities.
