More Than 100 Attend Spring Conference and Spring Fling
More than 100 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students joined us in Flowood for MAFP's Spring Conference April 21-23. The conference featured CME, workshops, social events and almost 40 exhibitors. The CME sessions were held Saturday and Sunday morning. Highlighting the conference was the Saturday night social by the pool at the Sheraton.

The MAFP Board of Directors and MAFP Foundation Board of Trustees enjoyed a night at Trustmark Park on Friday evening, even with a rained out game. Both boards also met during the weekend to plan for future events and discuss issues. MAFP hosted collaboration meetings among Mississippi family medicine residency program coordinators. This has turned out to be a great networking group.

The Spring Fling event for residents and students was held on Saturday and the groups met in separate breakout rooms from the doctors, hearing specialized speakers. During the day, they elected student and resident board members as follows:

We were excited to announce during our Spring Conference, our annual meeting theme, “Explore Family Medicine”. Our current President, Dr. Paul Pavlov loves the outdoors and enjoys hiking, kayaking, golfing, and fishing and we know this will make for a fun atmosphere during our event.  The MAFP is offering the Knowledge Self-Assessment on Care of Older Adults on Sunday so that more folks can participate. You will earn 8 hours of CME in an afternoon. We are pleased to have Drs. Jennifer Gholson, Lee Greer and John Mitchell lead our event.

Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) Study Groups give you credit for your maintenance of certification through the American Board of Family Medicine. Learners come together to complete the KSA by working through 60 core competency questions. Learners work together to assess, review, and decide the best answer as a group. ABFM awards 8 credits to diplomates who complete each session.

Please make room reservations and register today so MAFP staff can plan accordingly. We want to make sure we have enough t-shirts and MAFP swag for our attendees.

New Training Requirements in the MATE ACT
Recent federal legislation requires physicians renewing or registering for a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe controlled substances to complete eight hours of training on substance use disorder, effective June 27, 2023.
Physicians will need to report that they have completed the training when they renew their DEA registration or when they register for the first time. Since DEA registration is renewable every three years, most physicians won’t have to act immediately to comply. Physicians only need to complete the eight hours of training once.

The required training must cover “treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid or other substance use disorders,” according to an AAFP News report.

Physicians may have already completed courses meeting the criteria for the new requirement, because “the DEA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have updated curricular recommendations to confirm that previous X-waiver and other substance use disorder training hours will count toward the new requirements when completed with an accredited organization,” according to an AAFP News Report .

The 2023 MAFP Annual Meeting will include three lectures on Opioid Prescribing Education for 3 hours of credit. Additional supplemental training is also available through SCOPE of Pain’s supplemental training page and would count towards the new requirement.

AAFP recently published a new resource detailing what family physicians need to know about the new rules. Check out the resource here:  "New Training Requirement for Controlled Substance Rx: Answers to Common Questions."
