Dr. Mandi Neujahr Selected as IVMA’s Emerging Leader Liaison  
Dr. Mandi Neujahr (pronounced “new year”) has been selected for the position of 2020-2021 Incoming IVMA Emerging Leader Liaison (ELL).   Dr. Neujahr is a Staff Veterinarian at Nieman Ranch in Northwest Iowa, specializing in swine medicine.
 
The purpose of the ELL position is to build relationships between the IVMA and ISU CVM students and recent graduates.
 
The ELLs are chosen from applicants who have graduated from veterinary school in the last seven years. The positions are two-year assignments; the first year the ELL is the “Incoming ELL” and then they advance to the position of “Senior ELL”. The 2020-2021 Senior ELL is Dr. Amie Roberts.

Midwest AMR Consortium Virtual Poster Session
IVMA members are invited to view the Midwest Antimicrobial Resistance Consortium Virtual Digital Poster Session next week, May 25-29.

Over 30 posters from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Nebraska, University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and USDA ARS will be displayed in a virtual and interactive format. The posters will demonstrate research that impacts or informs antibiotic use, stewardship or resistance.

In addition, poster presenters will be available for virtual chat in zoom rooms on Friday, May 29, 2020 from 10 AM -12 PM Central time. Please feel free to click the link to zoom at the bottom of the poster during that time and you will be automatically directed to the zoom conference room. 

IDALS Confirms Case of Equine Herpesvirus in Linn County
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has confirmed a positive case of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) in a horse at a boarding facility in Linn County. The horse is a 14-year-old Paint mare and is showing neurological signs of EHV.

To prevent the virus from spreading, the positive horse and 18 other horses at the facility are quarantined for 21 days. The barn staff is monitoring the quarantined animals for clinical signs of EHV and taking their temperatures twice per day.

Upcoming IVMA Executive Board Elections
Ballots will be sent out next week for IVMA Elections. Most ballots will be sent via email, but for those members who do not have email, they will arrive by mail. 

Dr. Shawn Nicholson of Stuart will be on the ballot as the nominee for IVMA Vice President.

For those members who live in  even  numbered Districts, the ballot will also include candidates for IVMA Executive Board members.  

Two IVMA members are running for IVMA Executive Board positions for the first time. Dr. Patrick Simonsen of Le Mars is running to fill the open position in District 4 and Dr. Lindsey Speer of Prole is running in District 18.  The remaining Districts have incumbents on the ballot.  

Ballots for both the Executive Board and the IVMA Vice President position will be due back to the IVMA office by  June 20
New Report: COVID-19 Economic Impact on Agriculture
The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) at Iowa State University has released a report entitled The Impact of COVID-19 on Iowa's Corn, Soybean, Ethanol, Pork and Beef Sectors.

The Executive Summary states that the COVID-19 outbreak’s impact on revenue includes: reductions of $658 million for fed cattle, $34 million for calves and feeder cattle, and $2.1billion for hogs.

Nominate for IVMA Awards
It's that time of year to consider nominating a deserving colleague for one of three annual   IVMA awards . It is the IVMA's honor and pleasure to recognize members of our association who have made significant contributions to the veterinary profession, their clinic and their patients.

We encourage you to take a moment and ask, "Who has made a difference?" and let us know about that extraordinary person.

The following awards will be given out at the IVMA Annual Meeting in September:

Join the IVMA's Power of Ten Leadership Class!

A new class of POTL is beginning this fall and we want YOU to be part of it! POTL is a leadership opportunity for veterinarians who have been out of school seven years or less.  

POTL participants will attend a series of leadership development sessions from the fall of 2020 until spring 2021. The IVMA will provide topic experts and meeting expenses at no charge for participants. Some CE credits may be available.

Need PC Supplies?
During the COVID-19 crisis we may be shipping out preconditioning supplies slightly less frequently. The best option to order PC supplies is to email your order to [email protected] .

Be sure to include:

  1. The number of tags/certificates needed (a box is 100 tags; a case is 1000 tags). Certificates can be ordered in any amount (no minimum).
  2. The color of tags or certificates needed (green or gold)
  3. The shipping address.
  4. A phone number for the IVMA staff to call if they they have questions.

The IVMA staff will do its best to ship the PC certificates and tags as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
