Dear Ones,

It’s the last Friday in May, the beginning of the long Memorial Day weekend.

Three years ago, as Tim and I were returning to Culver City( after our first visit to the Quad City area, meeting with the Emmanuel Lutheran Church call committee) we were blessed to be able to visit my parents’ graves at the National Cemetery in Cave Creek on Memorial Day. It was the first time we had seen the new headstone that included both of their names, as my mom had passed the year before. It was moving to see all the flags on the headstones in the cemetery and it called to mind our sons as Boy Scouts, placing American Flags on the graves at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles in years past. This Sunday, during the prayers, there will be an opportunity for folks to name those family members and friends that have died in service to our country. We will close with singing “O When the Saints Go Marching In” as we remember those saints who died protecting us and our freedoms.

Two important things about this weekend. First: we will be recording the 10:00 a.m. outdoor worship service on Sunday morning, and then uploading it to YouTube. We are not live-streaming (logistics are too difficult with outdoor worship), but will upload the recording as soon as we can afterwards. Second: the church office will be closed on Monday, in observance of Memorial Day. We will be back in the office on Tuesday.

Are you in town this Sunday (May 30th)? We will have a single outdoor worship service at 10:00am with a Blessing of Bicycles for the start of summer, you’ll receive an angel charm to attach to your handlebars! Bring your own lawn chair and maybe an umbrella for shade. Since it’s outside, the CDC says we can be without masks since we are distancing! We will have a time of joyous worship and everyone will be sent home with a homemade cinnamon roll from our kitchen angels, Carole and Jim Rebholz! I think a Hawaiian theme is appropriate, please join us for this joyous time of worship.

Gene Fougner is looking for a few brave types to help with some special drum music for this Sunday’s service, really fun and easy. If you can count to four…you can do this! If you would like to take part, be at church at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday for the rehearsal. Kids are especially invited! I’ll be drumming; it sounds like serious fun!

The Church in a Changing World Task Force has advised us that we no longer need to make a reservation for Sunday morning services! Make sure to check in at the Welcome Table!

We are able to use the church for small meetings of up to 25 people with masks and social distancing. Groups like Bible studies, ministry teams and the quilters can meet in the Fellowship Hall or the Sanctuary. We ask that folks continue to wear masks unless the entire group is fully vaccinated; if all are vaccinated, the group may choose to remove their masks.

If you are someone who helps with the Interfaith Meal or would like to be part of the Fellowship Ministry that will be serving food during fellowship time in the future, you need to have a Food Handler’s Card! The certification is good for two years. To make things easy, we are offering the class on Wednesday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. in our very own Fellowship Hall! Please contact Mary in the church office to sign up for the class; we need at least ten people!

A Bible verse for today:

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly.
