-----This July we will be offering a wonderful summer camp for your youth. Totus Tuus, “totally yours”, is offered to deepen and celebrate our children’s life and friendship with the Lord. Here is information about the camp in July:

Totus Tuus is a summer, week-long Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion and Eucharistic worship for students entering grades one through 12. We strive to help young people understand their faith through catechesis, so they may live in today’s world through a “parish mission” for the young students of the parish, all with a strong emphasis on fun.

Totus Tuus is concerned not only with teaching the faith, but also igniting the hearts of its team members and young people. Totus Tuus seeks to assist and supplement the work of parents and parishes toward a deeper understanding of their faith and the Person of Christ.

The mission of Totus Tuus is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion and an openness to their vocation by constantly challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary, and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her.

Totus Tuus – Totally Yours
Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning totally yours, is the shortened version of St. John Paul II’s motto, “Totus Tuus ergo sum et omnia mea tua sunt.” Originally taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary. It also expresses our effort to give our all to every young person we encounter during this summer mission work.

Totus Tuus calls upon college students and seminarians from Chicago and across the United States to carry out its mission. These missionaries are hired for their love of the faith, energy, enthusiasm, ability to work as a team, commitment to spiritual growth and desire to work with youth. Those hired are extensively trained, put on teams of four (two men and two women) and sent out to a different parish every week for six weeks. Within the parish, they conduct a week-long “parish mission”, teaching and inspiring the parish’s youth.

In these teams, Christ’s love is made manifest. The love shared by these team members is the example of authentic Christian living, and their lives for the summer are centered on prayer and the sacraments. It is through this supernatural life that they work to serve and be a witness. “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 41). Youth see these teachers are joyful and on fire with the Catholic faith, and they long for the same thing in their lives.

The daily schedule for Totus Tuus teachers revolves around Mass, Sacrament and prayer – a summer entrusted fully to the Lord, and a heart devoted to youth and parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Totus Tuus teachers will lead young people to Jesus for a week; however, Mary will lead them to Jesus for a lifetime. Mary is a living catechism, and the mother and model of catechists. Therefore, Totus Tuus promotes Marian devotion. By meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, we come to see how Mary always leads us to her Son.

Finally, Totus Tuus demonstrates one can be a faithful Catholic and still have fun. Morning pump up skits, along with songs, recesses, games and a water fight in the parishes are all manifestations of fun built into the program.

-----Further down in this newsletter is more program information and how to register the young people in your family for Totus Tuus at St. Mary’s!

-----May God bless us as we walk with Jesus in newness of life,

Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, on the massacre of children in Uvalde, Texas

May 24, 2022

Today, a gunman walked into a grade school in Uvalde, TX, and slaughtered at least 18 children. The shooter allegedly killed his grandmother before driving to the school. Authorities say the suspect is dead. He was 18 years old.

The parents were told, “Please do not pick up students at this time. Students need to be accounted for before they are released to your care.” Imagine being a parent with a child in that school. Imagine having to bury them.

Parents now face a delay in identifying the victims—such was the extent of the damage done to these children’s bodies by the killer’s weapons.

The NRA has its annual meeting on Friday in Houston, about 300 miles east of the massacre, less than a year after the TX governor signed into law a bill that allows people without license or training to carry handguns.

We don’t yet know whether the Uvalde gunman took advantage of “permitless carry,” but we do know that America is awash in guns. We have more firearms than people.

It was not always this way. But more Americans died from gun violence in 2020 than during any other year on record: more than 45,000. That was a 25% increase from 2015, and a 43% increase from 2010.

Mass shootings have become a daily reality in America today. Two people died and 7 were injured last week during a mass shooting just down the street from Holy Name Cathedral. Last weekend in Chicago, 28 people were shot.

The size of the crisis, and its sheer horror, make it all too easy to toss up one’s hands and declare: Nothing can be done. But that is the counsel of despair, and we are a people of hope. What do we hope for our children?

That as a regular feature of their schooling, they learn how to behave should a shooter attack? That they feel endangered by simply doing what society says is good for them—going to school? That they come to wonder whether they even have futures at all?

Tonight our airwaves will fill with pundits who offer predictable lamentations and warnings and tut-tuts and thoughts and prayers. And we must pray—for the victims, their loved ones, for the parents who will send their kids off to school tomorrow.

We must weep and soak in the grief that comes with the knowledge that these children of God were cut down by a man who was just a few years their senior. But then we must steel ourselves to act in the face of what seems like insurmountable despair.

We know that gun safety measures make a difference. A 2021 Northwestern Medicine study found that the Federal Assault Weapons Ban prevented 10 mass shootings during the 10 years it was in effect: news.northwestern.edu/stories/2021/03/assault-weapon-ban-significantly-reduces-mass-shooting/

Researchers also determined that if the ban had remained in place in the years since it was allowed to expire, it could have prevented another 30 public mass shootings that killed 339 people and injured 1139 more.

As I reflect on this latest American massacre, I keep returning to the questions: Who are we as a nation if we do not act to protect our children? What do we love more: our instruments of death or our future?

The Second Amendment did not come down from Sinai. The right to bear arms will never be more important than human life. Our children have rights too. And our elected officials have a moral duty to protect them.

STEWARDSHIP
l
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”      (REVELATION 22:13)
This is a reminder of how we should live our lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – putting God first in all that we do. Not only when I am at Mass and parish activities, but when I am in the world, at work, or at school. Living gratefully and generously is a lifestyle; it should influence how I make all my daily decisions.
