Enhancing education through the appropriate use of technologies for all educators in New York State.

May 3, 2023

CEO 3

  • NYSCATE members attended the annual National Education Technology Advocacy and Policy Summit in Washington DC this week to meet with Congressional, US Department of Education, and Federal Communications Commission staffers to discuss key areas impacting K-12 schools across the country including AI, cybersecurity, full federal funding for professional development and academic enrichment with technology. Over a hundred educators throughout country met in Washington DC including the the team from NY featured in the picture.
  • As we approach the end of another school year, NYSCATE is switching over to a new CRM, which allows us to enhance many functions for our members including committee work, communities, purchasing products through our website, and our online member directory for our Premium Members. Each member should receive an email today outlining the new benefits. It is a great deal and we hope you will take advantage of these new opportunities.

  • I have been reporting on all of the new regional activities we have going on across NYS. I am really happy to be working with a great team from NYC working to bring a large regional conference back to the city! Stay tuned for big news coming soon!

The year is beginning to wind down but please consider joining us for the CTO Clinic on May 25 in Albany. The discussion is always great and this event is perfect for any education leadership position, regardless of your title. This year we are focusing on topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Data Privacy - items that ALL educators should be discussing.

Here’s Your Opportunity to Contribute to the National Ed Tech Plan!

The National Educational Technology Plan (NETP) is the flagship educational technology policy document for the U.S. The plan articulates a vision of equity, active use, and collaborative leadership to make everywhere, all-the-time learning possible. While acknowledging the continuing need to provide greater equity of access to technology itself, the plan goes further to call upon all involved in American education to ensure equity of access to transformational learning experiences enabled by technology.

Learning Forward and Project Tomorrow are conducting individual and group interviews that will inform the plan. It is a shared goal to ensure input to the NETP from a diverse set of stakeholders. We are committed to collecting and synthesizing the insights of K-12 stakeholders around equity issues with technology use to support teaching and learning. We invite your participation!

D2L-commissioned research identifies educator interest in more timely, relevant and flexible professional learning, including as a mechanism to reduce their burnout. Preparing Students for NYS Computer Based Testing

Harris Education Solutions has developed a free guide to help you get ready for the state assessments this year.

Ensuring students feel ready and confident in their test-taking abilities, especially with the upcoming NYS Assessments and Regents exams, is imperative to ensure success.  We’ve put together a guide with steps to follow to prepare for computer based testing which includes:

  • Putting together an Assessment Team to work together on test development discussing question formats, how many will be included on the test, test design, implementation, and platform.
  • Having a practice run that includes sample questions on the same or similar topics covered on the actual assessment, as well as question formats that mimic the real test questions.
  • Designing a timeline for test day so students know what to expect and how long the test will take.
  • Working with technology experts to ensure on test day everything runs smoothly.
  • Walking through the test finalization process, including submitting answers, gathering, and sharing test results.

Reclaim Control of Your Hallways

May 17, 2023, at 11:00 am ET

Join NYSCATE Corporate Council member Securly for this robust discussion to learn about the effectiveness of e-hallpass.

You may not realize it, but the traditional paper hall pass system just isn’t that effective. There’s no easy way to keep track of how many passes students use in a day, what students are currently allowed to be out of class, or where students are in an emergency. Students know this and an easy to misuse system leads to trouble. Issues like vandalism, vaping, or simply missing instructional time can all be traced back to schools not having control over hall pass usage.

e-hallpass is an electronic hall pass system that helps admins and teachers track and issue hall passes in real-time. Increasing academic outcomes and student accountability in your school starts with minimizing class disruptions and creating an environment where instructional time is protected. To help you accomplish this, e-hallpass can help you set limits on the number of passes students are allowed each day, and the number of students allowed in one location at a time. You can even block the ability for students to be out of class with specific other students, which can reduce bullying, self-harm, and potential substance abuse.
