"I Miss My Grandkids!"

My kids are bored . Staying in is getting old . So much for any fun this summer. These are common refrains as StayHome/StaySafe continues. We can all feel it, the question is, "What are we going to do about it?" Eschewing science and expert medical advise isn't prudent, and willful disregard for the wellbeing of others isn't Christlike, so here we find ourselves with the challenging opportunity to do things we've never done before. Out of that challenge came the idea to make the June Sermon Series a fun-filled, light-hearted yet meaningful, family-centric opportunity for the young at heart to connect with your kids, grandkids, and one another in a unique way. Beginning June 7th and continuing each Sunday in June, Martin is Going to the Movies to find faith in the films that are hot this year.
Here is what YOU can do to make it
the most successful summer series ever!

  • Watch the Film of the Week sometime before Sunday morning worship. (Each movie in the series is currently available on more than one OnDemand television platforms, as well as on several online streaming sites. If you've already seen the film, watch it again and pay attention to the biblical themes and motifs you may have missed the first time. If you can't for some reason, no worries; you won't get lost or be left out. Trust me.t Maybe consider a virtual watch party with a group of friends or Sunday school class?

  • Connect with others in your life. Give them the Martin Facebook Livestream link www.facebook.com/martinUMC/ to your adult kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc. and urge them to meet you on Sundays at 11:00 for some "out of the box" worship summer fun. Suggest they watch, or more likely rewatch, the movies also.

  • Use the shared experience as a conversation starter to have meaningful talks with those kids and grandkids about faith. Your faith. Their faith. God's love. The importance of Christian community. You'll have a perfect way to engage them as you talk during the week about things eternal in the context of something they connect with and care about - movie characters. (Even if they don't drop in for worship, I guarantee you they've seen the films or know the stories, and you'll have a new way to explore faith with them.)

  • Get prepared for a few weeks of nothing you've ever seen before, something I've never done before. I guarantee you, no one, not even the kids, will be bored in church. You might even pick up some popcorn the next time you get groceries.

  • We begin June 7 with FROZEN 2. It is not just a movie for little girls, so grab the remote and hit play. You won't be disappointed.
I am so very blessed to be your pastor.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Lara aka "The Vicar"

Beginning June 6th and continuing throughout the summer, Martin UMC will be offering one-off and ongoing opportunities via Zoom or Facebook Live to connect with one another, learn something new and have a bit of fun doing it! Santa George kicks things off for us at 5pm on June 6th. Be sure to check the ZOOM INTO SUMMER section of the newsletter each week to stay in the know about Who and What is coming up and When!
Santa George shares the inside scoop on how to make the gourmet pizzas he is known for posting photos of that tease the tastebuds. He will teach us how to make the dough, share alternatives if yeast is hard to locate, and walk us through both family-friendly and gourmet topping options. You can just watch and learn for later, or join in the fun of real-time food prep with Santa George and friends. Email Santa George via the link to receive additional information, including ingredient lists for the various options. See you Saturday in Santa's kitchen!
The first week of Casserole ministry was a huge success! Thank you to Deanna for helping with Community Pantry bags! Thank you Robin Bratton and Anne Unrue for assisting last night! We had three people assisting last night as we are attempting to get people trained for this project. We will probably have three people in the future as it will allow the process to be more efficient, while maintaining social distance. Also, a huge shout out and thank you to all you cooks who brought some amazing dishes!! We served 25 of our regular clients from Beacon House. As with all start ups, we have a few ideas to make it go smoother.
Now pay attention all you cooks! Next week we will be adjusting the day and time. We will drop off from 11am to 11:30am on Saturday June 6. I expect that this will be the time going forward. Why? you ask. Martin Methodist has a new opportunity to acquire food through the "Farms to Families" program. This program has the government purchasing food directly from the farmers and providing it for those in need. See the link below for more information. The trucks arrive with the product early on Saturday morning. I am able to receive a few dozen boxes of food to be distributed to our client families along with the casseroles. We will also be able to supply our BridgesWork families with some of the food boxes. This is going to be AMAZING! and is expected continue for several weeks.
