Consensus on accommodating growth and increasing housing supply at Federal of Canadian Municipalities Conference | |

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told municipal leaders that the federal government will support growing communities and municipalities that increase housing supply in his keynote address at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference (FCM).
“Whether it's in a big city or in a small village, every one of you has the capacity and the duty to change the situation. Every one of you has an essential tool to act and you are creative. The more audacious you are, the more we will support you and the more you'll see the growth of your communities,” PM Trudeau said.
“And as each of you knows, to lead is to choose. Well, let us choose to take action, to put NIMBYism aside and say yes to new opportunities. Let's choose to build housing that will welcome in new people and new energy and new growth for our communities.”
Prime Minister Trudeau also stated the federal government’s support of density in transit corridors, “We need to keep our communities accessible to public transit, which means being strategic and aggressive in densification.”
The Deputy Leader of the Federal Conservative Party, Melissa Lantsman echoed the need to increase housing supply to accommodate growth and repeated the party policy of linking infrastructure funding to the number of housing approvals by municipalities.
“We will use the power of the federal government to help get that done by rewarding cities who get things done faster, who cut red tape and who actually increase supply… Canada's Conservatives think that the amount that you get should be tied to the amount that you do.”
FCM CEO, Carole Saab, discussed the need for expanding Canada’s population as the global population is set to decline, “Canada has an aging population and more young people are opting to have fewer or no children.
"And of course, we're not alone. Most OECD countries are experiencing the same facing depopulation unless they look to increasing immigration and so in earnest, the global competition to attract young people and our future workforce is on because the simple fact is that our economies depend on it. Economic growth is tied directly to population growth. And growth is a good thing. Progress is a good thing. Welcoming more people to this incredible country is a good thing.”

OEC provides healthy projections
for dividend growth

During Monday's Meeting of Council, the OEC (Oakville Enterprise Corporation) provided a healthy projection for dividend growth from the 2022 outcomes.
Town council applauded the safety of the work being done by the OEC with Councillor Longo stating: “Congratulations on the 2 million hours worked without a lost time incident that's quite significant and it shows a culture of safety so congratulations on that because that's an amazing milestone.”
Mayor Burton also included his remarks on the annual dividend stating: “On behalf of all of Council I thank you for the projection of healthy increases in the annual dividend. Those dividends are among the resources that Council is looking to support our Downtown Cultural Hub plans so it's no small matter.”

Registration opens for fire services camp
for young women in Halton

Blaze Fire Academy, a joint initiative of the fire departments in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills, is now accepting online applications for its camp for young women, ages 15 to 18.
This is an opportunity to get a firsthand experience into all aspects of the fire service – fire suppression and more. The online applications close on June 23, 2023.

Victim Services Unit Receives Attorney General's 2022-2023 Award of Distinction | |

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is proud to announce that its Victim Services Unit (VSU) was among those recently honoured with an Attorney General’s 2022-23 Victim Services Award of Distinction.
The award acknowledges the outstanding contributions made by individuals and organizations to support victims of crime as well as raises awareness of issues surrounding victims in Ontario.
HRPS’ VSU, which is comprised of civilian members and more than 60 trained volunteers, was recognized for developing a sexual assault program that places Victim Services as the first point of contact for those wishing to report a sexual assault.
