Reflections from Amy Schwabenlender, Executive Director
Weekly reflections from the front lines serving single adults experiencing homelessness, at the uncertain phase of a global pandemic, Phoenix "Spring," disrupting systems and living up to the legacy of a champion.

It's been 11 days since my last post and 23 1/2 weeks since losing my sense of smell. I am able to smell bleach, urine on sidewalks and some citrus household cleaners. It's a start. And I dream of smelling coffee and chocolate....

That smelling inability is still nothing in comparison to experiencing homelessness. For another two weeks running, the Human Services Campus Outreach Team has counted more than 1,000 individuals unsheltered in our neighborhood. And we have opened the Respiro shelter with a gradual ramp up to 100 people. One hundred less of a thousand is not really noticeable. The sidewalks and streets are full. The posts and chains installed by the City nearly two years ago are now used as structural components to hold up walls of tarp, canopies of tent, and to hold leashes of dogs. High temperatures are now daily in the 90s.

There is no quick way out of this increase in unsheltered homelessness across Maricopa County. Unless, well unless, elected officials and decision makers would treat it as a humanitarian crisis...[Read More]
HSC Client Reunited with Friend in Michigan
"Judy S." came into the Brian Garcia Welcome Center seeking any help she could get in order to travel to Michigan. Judy stated that she was fleeing a domestic violence situation involving her stepfather. She said that it had been hard getting away to seek help. And she was very grateful to have finally made her way to the Campus.

Judy indicated that she had a home waiting for her with her best friend "Roxanne" in Michigan. An HSC employee contacted her friend who verified that Judy was more than welcome to come stay with her indefinitely, or until she could get back on her own two feet, obtain employment and locate affordable housing. HSC Staff purchased a bus ticket, and Judy was on her way to a new home. Thanks to your support we are able to assist women like Judy every day.
Bottled Water Drop-off is this Saturday, May 7th
With summer upon us, and the increased number of unsheltered people living near the Campus, we need at least 100,000 bottles of water per month to help clients stay hydrated and healthy. The first bottled water donation drop-off of the summer is Saturday, May 7th from 9 am to noon, and it couldn’t be easier. You pull up at 15th Avenue & Harrison St., and our staff will remove the donations from your vehicle. We also welcome travel-sized toiletries, summer clothing, shoes, new men's/women's underwear, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. For more information or to schedule a drop-off on a different day, please email [email protected] or call us at 602-282-0849.

And a big thank you to our partner St. Joseph the Worker, the originator of ThirstAid, for promoting collaboration among Campus partners to ensure our collective clients have water to drink as they work on ending their homelessness.
