Pseudorabies Virus Confirmed in Iowa Pigs

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced confirmed cases of the pseudorabies virus in swine herds in Iowa and Texas. The small commercial swine facility in Iowa received swine from the Texas herd in recent months. The Texas herd was housed outdoors with potential contact to feral swine. Though pseudorabies was eliminated from United States commercial swine herds in 2004, pseudorabies is still found in wild or feral swine populations, which remain a potential threat of exposure for domestic pigs.

State Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig and State Veterinarian Jeff Kaisand said Friday, May 1, that five sows transported from Texas to the Iowa farm tested positive for the highly contagious disease. About 100 pigs in the facility are being destroyed to prevent the disease's spread.

Naig said the state must follow U.S. Department of Agriculture standards in responding to the outbreak. For example, officials will test farms within 5 miles of the infected facility to determine if the disease has spread. They will again test farms within 2 miles 30 days after the infected farm has been cleaned and disinfected.
