Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week May 8-12

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! SFPS' celebration began on Tuesday, May 2nd, with the delivery of bagels, cream cheese and tokens of appreciation for all!

"Our teachers are amazing and I'm in awe of what they do. In every classroom and school in SFPS, something remarkable happens each day because of their inspiration, knowledge and dedication," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "We encourage everyone in the SFPS community to share their appreciation for our teachers who strive to improve lives and learning."

Staff wellness rooms ready for a workout!

SFPS schools are being outfitted with equipment and supplies to support staff well-being. In January 2023, Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez asked SFPS' school principals to establish wellness rooms to ensure that school workplaces are enjoyable and supportive. With equipment deliveries underway to meet each school's unique needs, the wellness room are quickly becoming a reality.

The above picture of the Ramirez Thomas Elementary School wellness room shows how the rooms can be stress-release zones where staff can engage in light physical activity and leave any stressors behind. The massage chairs at the top provide a place to kick back and relax during a break, while the other equipment provides for more strenuous workouts.

"This is part of our commitment to making SFPS a district of choice, known for investing in employees across the board and being a positive place to work," said Superintendent Chavez.

The district is using federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) funding to support the development of these spaces, including the purchase of light gym equipment (e.g. exercise bikes, yoga equipment, etc.) and items like sound equipment, lighting, furniture, etc.

The New Mexico history of Edward Day Cohota and a Las Vegas laundry

The Fort Union National Monument, located in Northeastern New Mexico off of I-25, exit 366, offers a piece of Asian Pacific American history. As noted by the National Park Service (see https://www.nps.gov/foun/learn/historyculture/new-mexico-mosaic.htm), "The garrison at Fort Union had a surprise when Company C, 15th U.S. Infantry arrived at the fort in June 1872. The new arrivals included Edward Day Cohota, a native of China. Edward served at numerous forts on the western frontier, including several years at Fort Union during the mid-1870s. While serving at Fort Union, Edward was a cook for his company. He also helped build a telegraph line across northeastern New Mexico.

"His lifelong odyssey took him from the docks of China as a little boy, to Massachusetts, to the battlefields of the Civil War, and to the western frontier. His later life was shaped by the discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which banned him from becoming a U.S. citizen despite his decades of service in the U.S. Army.

"When the railroad came to Fort Union and nearby Las Vegas, NM, in 1880, more Chinese began arriving in the then-bustling town. An 1882 murder case in a Las Vegas Chinese laundry began the long process of dismantling the onerous Chinese Exclusion Act. A Chinese immigrant was accused of shooting a laundry patron. The accused, Yee Shun, protested his innocence... Yee Shun lost the case...but in the process the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that the accusing Asian American had a right to testify in court (previously denied by the Chinese Exclusion Act)."
