"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

From The Pastor's Desk:
On Mothering Day, or Mother-Daughter-Sister-Auntie-Friend day:
Gender is an intriguing expression; it affects the way we view and process the world and our expectations, often in subtle and surprising ways. Culture and science struggle to help us make sense of biological sex; the Navajo people had five different categories of gender, and the "Dad" in Finding Nemo was actually a female, as for clownfish, if the female dies then the breeding male's anatomy changes to become female. At other times gender is so strongly set that there is no way to fight it; when I gave my sons dolls to play with, dolls inevitably became footballs, and any dramatic-play toys were used solely to calculate the physics of tow trucks and aircraft. Add to this that not all women are biological or cultural mothers, and relationships with mothers are all over the map. As much as gender is sometimes portrayed as pink or blue, the reality is more complex than that.
Into this we try to add days of gratitude to those in our life who have "mothered" us or whom we have mentored or given a share of our spirit. What a precious role that is! And how appropriate to share our thanks and joy at being able to so care for one another.
It's also a day when we acknowledge the ways that God's love is motherly - a truth that can't, of course, be contained in only one day. As a God who births, who nurtures, who "longs to gather her brood under her wing" (Matthew 23:37), God's love is inclusive of all genders and goes beyond any limits we humans would place. On this Sunday's Mother's Day, may you mirror God's embracing love and beautiful creativity to the whole world, including those who have given you their time and their love.
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

Love And Other Consolation Prizes
From the bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet comes a powerful novel, inspired by a true story, about a boy whose life is transformed at Seattle’s epic 1909 World’s Fair.
“An evocative, heartfelt, beautifully crafted story that shines a light on a fascinating, tragic bit of forgotten history.” (Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale)
For twelve-year-old Ernest Young, a charity student at a boarding school, the chance to go to the World’s Fair feels like a gift. But only once he’s there, amid the exotic exhibits, fireworks, and Ferris wheels, does he discover that he is the one who is actually the prize. The half-Chinese orphan is astounded to learn he will be raffled off—a healthy boy “to a good home.”

New Jersey Synod
Assembly
Quilt
Thanks to Gloria Brosious for putting most of the finishing touches on this year's New Jersey Synod Assembly quilt. Squares for the quilt were made by members of congregations from all over the state. A congregation at one church sewed the squares together forming the top of the quilt. After the squares were assembled, Gloria Brosious "assembled" the quilt by adding the batting and backing and sewing the boarder onto the quilt. The "quilt tying" will be done at another church to complete it. The quilt will be displayed and dedicated at the Assembly which meets this weekend. (The photo below shows Gloria with the quilt.)

Lord Of Life Acolyte Induction
The word acolyte is derived from the Greek word akolouthos, meaning companion, attendant, or helper, who waits continually upon another: a follower. The Acolyte ministry has its roots in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible, where the prophet Samuel is seen assisting Eli, the Levite priest, and Elisha is seen assisting Elijah the Prophet. Historically, acolytes were young men who were preparing for priesthood. Today, we welcome any church member to participate in this ministry. As in the past, acolytes continue to assist the pastor through their service in lighting candles, being a part of the Gospel procession, serving as a crucifer, assisting with the collection of the offering, and other duties as necessary. They are important participants in worship and perform vital tasks.
This past Palm Sunday, Lord Of Life inducted three of its members as acolytes: Armando Dennis, Farrah Dennis, and Caedmon Trozzo. A photo of their induction is below.
Would you like to join this important Ministry? Please contact the Ministry leader, Jacqueline Dennis (jaqid@comcast.net) or see Pastor Wendolyn.

Ukraine Relief
Through
Lutheran Disaster Response
Lutheran World Relief will be supporting assistance efforts to refugees who are victims of the Russian invasion into the FREE and INDEPENDENT nation of Ukraine. As of this writing, it is estimated by the United Nations that over 5 million Ukrainians have fled their homeland and many more will follow. It is also estimated that over 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes.
A pledge of a $50,000 matching fund has been made for the first $50,000 given to LDR. If you would like to contribute to this effort, use the link below which will enable you to directly contribute.
"Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, I will not be shaken. For in the day of trouble, God will give me shelter, hide me in the hidden places of the sanctuary, and raise me high upon a rock. Even now my head is lifted up above my enemies who surrround me. Therefore I will offer sacrifece in the sanctuary, sacrifices of rejoicing; I will sing and make music to the Lord."

Another Way To Help
Ukrainians In Need:
BAGS FOR UKRAINE
(Sale Ends Sunday, May 15th)
Purse, Diaper Bag, Fanny pack, Backpack, Tote, Carry All, Pocketbook, Crossbody, Clutch, Weekender. Our bags have many names, but the same purpose – holding the things we need. Imagine fleeing a war with your family, and only being able to take one, maybe two bags – with everything you need. As Mother’s Day approaches, we think of those strong women in Ukraine doing just that. That bag she carries, it holds the world. In an effort to support those affected by the war, Lord of Life is making and selling tote bags in a bold sunflower print to remind us that a simple bag can be all we need. These totes are a generous 18” x 18” and are machine washable. They are $12 each and 50% of every sales goes to the ELCA’s Eastern European Crisis Response. The other 50% goes back into making more bags so we can continue this important support mission. With boots on the ground in Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, Lutheran Disaster Response is already deeply involved in its mission. We can help too, one bag at a time, from one mom to another, we will stand strong and tall like the sunflower – together.
The last weekend of the sale will be May 14th and 15th, so be sure to get your tote bag by then.

Lyme Disease Awareness Month
As most of you know, Lyme disease is a dangerous microbial infection carried by ticks. Many individuals in our geographic area will contract this disease in the coming months as ticks make their appearance. May has been designated “Lyme Disease Awareness Month.” Let’s all take some time to think about the things we can do to keep us safe like staying out of tall grass areas, inspecting for ticks on our body after being outdoors, and use of insect repellants. The Lyme Disease Association is headquarted in Jackon, NJ and is dedicated to combating this illness. A link to their website is below which provides more information about Lyme Disease.

From The Editor:
Happy Mother's Day
Sunday, May 8th:
"A Mother's Love,"
(By Helen Steiner Rice)
A Mother's love is something that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may,
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away,
It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking,
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems,
It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation,
A many splendored miracle man cannot understand,
And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.
LifeLines Ending Song:
This ending song was one we sang in our church youth group years ago. “He Leadeth Me” by American Joseph Gilmore (1834-1918) was inspired out of a particular struggle in American history. This hymn was composed in 1862 during the Civil War, a time of upheaval and insecurity. The author was preaching at First Baptist Church in Philadelphia soon after his ordination when he composed this hymn.
Dr. Carlton R. Young, The United Methodist Hymnal editor, cites Gilmore’s recollections on the hymn's formation: “I set out to give the people an exposition of the 23rd Psalm, which I had given before on three or four occasions, but this time I did not get further than the words ‘He Leadeth Me.’ Psalm 23:2, ‘he leadeth me beside the still waters,’ became the theme of the song.”
|
|
"He leadeth me, He leadeth me. By His own hand He leadeth me. His faithful follower I will be. By His own hand He leadeth me!" (Refrain)
