SUPPORT YOUR CHURCH WITH YOUR WEEKLY OFFERING

These are challenging times for all of us. The church is committed to supporting you in your spiritual and material needs, but it is a group effort. If you are able, please consider continuing to contribute to the church so that she can continue in her mission. Your Sunday offerings, collection plate and candle donations can all be done online or by mailing a check to the church.
LIGHT A VIRTUAL CANDLE
Lighting a candle is a way of extending one's prayer and showing solidarity with the person on whose behalf the prayer is offered. The candle symbolizes that prayer.  🕯
On Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, Rev. Fr. Hrant Kevorkian will lite a candle for every request received. If you would like to submit a request, you can contact Fr. Hrant, call the Church office at (313)336-6200, send us a message on social media , reply to this email, or click the button below.

Apparition of the Holy Cross
THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE (1.1-10)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN ( 7.14-24 )
About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. The Jews were astonished at it, saying, “How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?” Then Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me. Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him.

“Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me?” The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I performed one work, and all of you are astonished. Moses gave you circumcision (it is, of course, not from Moses, but from the patriarchs), and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I healed a man’s whole body on the sabbath? Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

LITURGICAL CALENDAR
FEAST OF THE APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSS

This Sunday (May 10) the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Apparition of the Holy Cross ( Yerevoumun Sourp Khatchi ). The Apparition of the Cross is the first feast dedicated to the Holy Cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar. It is celebrated in remembrance of the appearance of the sign of the cross over the city of Jerusalem in 351 that remained in the sky for several hours. The apparition extended from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives (about two miles), and was brighter than the sun and was seen by everyone in Jerusalem. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cyril, used this occasion to remind Emperor Constantius of Byzantium of his father’s (Constantine the Great) orthodox faith. Cyril claimed the Apparition was further reason to return to orthodoxy.

Traditionally, the Armenian translation of Cyril’s message is read on this feast day during the  Antastan  service prior to the Gospel lection. Cyril is a revered Doctor of the Church and he is remembered in the Armenian Church’s liturgical calendar. The Apparition is celebrated by the Armenian and Greek churches. The Greeks observe it on the fixed date of May 7, while the Armenian date is moveable depending on the date of Easter. It is celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Easter.
NEWS AT ST. SARKIS
LOCAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH
On Thursday, April 30, 2020, the St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church Board of Trustees and Ladies' Guild generously sent meals to our local front-line healthcare workers as a token of appreciation. Shawerma & falafel sandwiches and baklava were provided to the emergency room staff as well as the COVID-19 recovery floor staff at Beaumont Hospital (formerly Oakwood) in Dearborn.
CHILDREN'S BIBLE STORY TIME
Since the Stay-at-Home orders took effect in March, St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church Sunday School has been hosting a Children's Bible Story Time. This activity is live streamed on Facebook at 3pm every Monday - Friday. During the story time, Miss Haigan Tcholakian begins with a prayer then reads a colorful biblical story. After the story, Miss Haigan gives the students an activity to complete at home. The students then send their completed activity to Miss Haigan, where she sometimes features their work during the story time the following day. At the end of the week, Miss Haigan reviews the stories that were read and the messages that were learned. This event is shared throughout the Eastern Prelacy and is watched daily by Armenian children all over the world.

Thank you Miss Haigan for giving us and our children something wonderful to look forward to every day!
