Mother's Day is this Sunday. It's a day of thanksgiving and celebration, it is also a day that is very hard for many people. Loss, grief, unfulfilled dreams can make what is a joyous celebration of Mother's Day for some a bittersweet or painful for others. It is for this reason that the church began long ago celebrating both Mother's Day and Father's Day within the context of a "festival of the Christian home." We recognize that families come in many different sizes and expressions, and we celebrate all the women and men who love, nurture, and encourage us along the journey of life. Perhaps one of the best expressions of this complexity is found in a piece of writing by Margot Starbuck, author of Not Who I Imagined: Surprised by a Loving God , for people who want to glimpse God's gracious countenance because they were raised by regular fallible mothers and fathers. Here's a snippet -

Bottom line: mentioning Mother's Day in worship is just tricky. There's no formula. So perhaps we acknowledge that most families are messy. Or maybe we make a mental note to also mention birth moms on one of the other fifty-one Sundays of the year. Perhaps we simply admit that it's a difficult day for many. Or we acknowledge that God is keenly aware of all that we hold in our hearts. On Mother's Day, the best we can do is to keep it real.

We will give thanks for a gracious and loving God whose mercies are tender and never failing. We will be united, family brought together in the most unexpected way as we face the ongoing difficulty around us; family created not by birth but by love. May the Festival of the Christian Home fill you with joy as we honor all the women who have loved and nurtured us.

Grace and peace,
