Clerk-Recorder's Office Seeks Volunteers for Mapping Prejudice in Contra Costa County

The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder's office is excited to announce the launch of Mapping Prejudice in Contra Costa County. This powerful community-driven initiative will identify and map racially restrictive covenants and clauses that were inserted into local property records to keep people who were not white from owning or occupying property.

Contra Costa County is doing this work in partnership with the Mapping Prejudice Project, a research team based in the University of Minnesota Libraries. This group has been working with communities across the country to map racial covenants since 2016. This new initiative, Mapping Prejudice in Contra Costa

County will engage residents of the county to identify and transcribe the information necessary to put these now-illegal restrictions on a modern map.

Volunteers from all over the County are invited to take part in this important work. Training and access to a digital portal to examine historical property records that have been flagged by the research team at the University of Minnesota for review will be provided. These documents offer a powerful hands-on learning experience and create an opportunity for community dialogue about our history and the legacy of housing discrimination.

Canyon Community Clean-Up A Great Success!

Saturday, May 3rd, the Canyon Community came together to perform an all hands clean-up of their beloved community. Many community members, and their dogs, picked up garbage along Pinehurst Road, the creek, and throughout the community. The debris boxes totaled 9.58 tons of trash, and 117 waste tires were removed from the community.

David Brockbank, Department of Conservation and Development, worked with the local garbage hauler to provide four dumpsters for the clean up event, as well as reflective vests for those working along the roadside. Tim Kraus, Environmental Health Division, partnered with Civic Corps to collect waste tires. Chris Lau, Public Works Department, provided 'slow' signs for the road clean up crews as well as garbage bags. Deputy Sheriff Adrian Calderon provided an escort for the roadside clean up crews.

The following day, the Canyon Community held a Free Day, which allowed community members to share items they no longer needed with their neighbors. At the end of the day, the leftovers were loaded up and taken to a local donation center.
