Memorial Day Weekend
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor,
Most people know that Memorial Day is a day to remember those who died during active military service. Many take the time to attend services and ceremonies to honor those who fought for our freedoms. It's also a time to gather with family, friends and neighbors to celebrate and enjoy the beginning of the summer season.

However you are spending this special holiday, AACA wishes you a happy and safe holiday!

These complimentary, current-year memberships are for first-time AACA applicants and are limited by the funds available for this program. These complimentary applications for membership are intended for individuals who have a genuine interest in the antique car hobby.

My Two Loves
By Carol Swanson, Deptford, NJ,

It all began in 1974 when a friend bought a Ford Gran Torino. I loved the styling. The following year, I found myself newly single and wanting a larger car than my 1973 Mustang.
I went to Winner Ford in Cherry Hill, NJ, and saw the 1975 Ford Elite model. I fell even harder for this new styling. I ordered the car, yellow with a brown vinyl roof and brown interior. On April 10, 1975, my mother Grace Segal and I went to pick it up and trade in my Mustang. It was love at first sight!
I happily drove the Elite everywhere. Then on August 13, 1976, I fell in love again. After two years of talking on the telephone through our work, Phil Swanson flew in from Indianapolis, IN, for a meeting. We had arranged to go out for a drink to celebrate our upcoming 30th birthdays and we fell in love that night. He had a 1970 Oldsmobile named "Betts" and decided that my Elite should be named "Baby"!
After driving Baby everyday for 10 years, we were finally going to buy a new car. For a very short minute, the words "trade-in" came up. When my husband saw me crying, he knew Baby was here to stay! We have moved up to a house with a 3-car garage. Baby now has her own Ford-decorated bay complete with her 8 winning trophies!
On April 10, 2015, we were once again back at Winner Ford - this time to celebrate Baby's 40th birthday. The staff was impressed that we still had the original invoice from that happy day that Baby came to live with me. We are looking forward to our next milestone - our 39th wedding anniversary!

Images from the Library - A "Pan-blicity" Stunt!
By Matthew Hocker, Assistant Librarian,

When you think of Minnesota, the automobile industry is probably one of the last things that comes to mind. However, from 1919 through 1921 the manufacturing facilities of the Pan automobile called the city of St. Cloud, MN, home. This month's image comes from the February 1918 issue of Pan Siftings, Pan's company publication.
In an unusual publicity stunt, Pan devoted an entire article to a Native American chief named "Ka-Be-Naw-Wey-Wence," which they purported to be the oldest living American at age 130. In English, he was known as Chief John Smith and the less flattering "Wrinkled Meat." The article showed a photograph of the man sitting behind the wheel of a Pan car. While "Wrinkled Meat" hated most modern amenities, the article claimed he loved driving around in a Pan. Because of the scent of the exhaust, he called all automobiles "skunk wagons."
Four years later, "Wrinkled Meat" passed away. In reality, he was probably around 100 years of age when he died. His extremely withered appearance probably gave rise to the belief that he was significantly older.
