Celebrating AAUW with Kim Churches
|
|
Did you miss our branch’s special interview with CEO Kim Churches last Saturday?
Last Saturday, our branch members were lucky to get a private interview with CEO Kim Churches. If you missed it, click on this link. The interview is about 30 minutes long. Don’t be surprised by the beginning! AAUW Fund Chair Dale Satake was the interviewer, but as luck would have it, her modem suddenly died. She had to run to member Ann Thomas’ home to use her computer. That’s why Dale looks a bit frazzled at the beginning and is identified as “Ann Thomas.”
Hear Kim’s honest and heartfelt answers to: Can you tell us about the latest work being done for women of color? What is planned on the STEM front? What are the most recent research reports? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future of women? How has your daughter influenced your work?
Her responses will make you proud to be a member of AAUW.

THE SIMPLE TRUTH ABOUT THE PAY GAP
|
|
AAUW's Continued Focus on Equal Pay for All
Over half a century after pay discrimination became illegal in the United States, a persistent pay gap between men and women continues to hurt our nation’s workers and our national economy. Pay equity will continue to be an AAUW priority until the gap is fully eliminated. We hope this latest edition of The Simple Truth motivates and empowers you to join us in this cause.

Presented by 2020 Named Gift Honoree,
Sue Torres, to
Melanie Chancellor and Angela Nuckles
Last year, AAUW was forced to cancel all Tech Trek camps in 2020. Melanie Chancellor and Angela Nuckles of the AAUW Marin Tech Trek committee did not want to let the Marin Tech Trekkers down.
|
|
Angela Nuckles ................................................................... Melanie Chancellor
|
|
With a great deal of hard work and research, Angela and Melanie created an amazing and unique 5-day virtual Tech Trek experience from scratch. They got contacts of women in STEM positions, made calls and emails to people all over the country, and lined up interesting speakers. They also figured out how to make some of the speakers' presentations a hands-on experience and helped to gather the supplies and deliver them to the girls prior to the Tech Trek week. In addition, they shared their experience with other branches and the state.
|
|
Presented by 2020 Named Honoree, Sherene Chen, to
Cherie Sorokin
As branch program chair this past year, Cherie quickly adapted the programming to zoom this past year and kept us all engaged and feeling less isolated. Most significantly, she met her goal of presenting a series of programs addressing the theme of racism in Marin. A huge highlight was the October program when our branch partnered with other Marin organizations to present a panel of six young people of color. They shared some very personal and impactful experiences with us. It was a powerful program and earned our branch a programming award from the state chapter.
|
|
Presented by AAUW Fund Chair, Dale Satake, to
Amy Anderson
When the shutdown prevented any in-person activities, Amy generously stepped up. She worked on the virtual holiday auction, coordinated the phone tree efforts and of course, supported the Tech Trekkers in so many ways when they could not attend an in-person camp.

2021 AAUW Marin NCCWSL Scholarship Recipients from Dominican University of California
|
|
I'm Jennifer Borromeo. I was born and raised in San Francisco. I'm a first generation Filipino American student double majoring in Global Public Health & Biological Sciences with a minor in Health Humanities. I’m currently in my second year of studies at Dominican. On-campus, I am currently the ASDU Director of Public Relations and an active member of Kapamilya (FilipinoAmerican Student Association). Through these opportunities, I am able to build leadership skills and network. I am passionate about community engagement and advocacy. Outside of Dominican, I am a part of a growing coalition named CLARA, which focuses on advocating for anti-violence and Title IX issues. Because my majors are so broad and allow me to explore different career paths, I am open to any career in healthcare or policy work. One of my future career paths is to become a Physician Assistant, where I hope to provide patients with proper health care and work to challenge the inequities we see in the medical field.
|
|
My name is Autumn Jordan. I am from Virginia where I attended the Meadowbrook Academy for Developing Entrepreneurs. I am a sophomore Business major with a double concentration in Marketing and Global Business and a double minor in Graphic Design and Global Innovation & Entrepreneurship. On campus, I am involved in the Barowsky Student Association as Chief Diversity Officer and in the Black Student Union as Treasurer. One of my career goals is to use my collected experience in entrepreneurship to start my own international firm.

Jacquelyn Torres, from Sonoma CA, is a transfer student at Dominican and a junior in the Honors Program double majoring in Political Science and History. She is the President, Founder, and Head Delegate for the Model United Nations Team at Dominican. She serves as the Executive Secretary for Student Government. She furthers her involvement by serving as a student representative for the Dominican University Diversity Action Group, the Curriculum Education Policy Committee, and the Finance Committee. In this student government role, she has worked on various initiatives - most notably a proposal to improve undocumented student support and resources. Jacquelyn also holds leadership positions in the History Association and IGNITE Club. Finally, she is involved on campus as a Student Assistant for the Dominican University of California Archives where she is leading an initiative to diversify the Archives collections. For future goals, she is interested in attending law school or pursuing a Ph.D. and later becoming involved in politics.

Help Support AAUW at All Levels
Renew your membership this spring.
|
|
Membership renewals for the 2021-2022 year will be starting soon. AAUW National dues in 2021 will increase by $3 to $62. State dues remain the same at $20.
But Wait!
Our branch dues have been $20 for many years, but for just this year,
and because our expenses were lower during the pandemic,
your Board voted to decrease branch dues by $3 to $17.
Total = $99, the same as last year!
Look for a payment reminder in May from Membership Chair Barbara Thomas.
Here are the ways to renew.
When you receive an email from AAUW National in May you will
be able to click on the link to pay your dues online with a credit
card. (Donations added here go to National)
You will also have the option to print out the form and mail it with
a check to the branch treasurer. (Donations added to your check go
to the Marin Branch)
All 50 year members and members without email will receive a
paper mailing for their dues renewal by June 1, 2020.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact:
