Reflections on Step 5

What a relief it was when I surrendered my wrongs to my sponsor and my higher power that I call God. It can be an intimidating step to take, but it is a necessary one to gain freedom from our obsession.

Step 5

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Tradition 5: Purpose

How do we practice the Fifth Tradition?

  • Do we welcome newcomers to our group and give them individual attention?
  • Do we ever volunteer to help newcomers, visitors, or other members who need transportation to attend our meetings?
  • What do we do to welcome back members who are returning to OA?
  • Can members find sponsors in our group?
  • Does anybody in our group make a point to call newcomers or members who have been missing from the meeting?

Living the Step Principles

Step 5: Integrity

We have the integrity to show the world our true selves. No longer needing to appear perfect, we can live more fully, having the courage to face up to our mistakes and test our strengths in the challenges of life.

Tradition Five inspired me to create a service position script that could be used in any meeting that looks to carry the message to a compulsive overeater that still suffers regardless of if that member is new, returning or never left the rooms.

The two positions are a Newcomer Greeter and a Relapse Contact.

Here is a suggested script to fulfill these positions

This group honors two new Service positions: Newcomer Greeter and a Relapse Contact.

Do we have a volunteer today at this meeting who would like to be today's Newcomer Greeter? Would you please leave your name and phone number in the chat?

"Who would like to be today's Relapse Contact for those who are still struggling with compulsive eating, and food behaviors? Would you please leave your name and phone number in the chat?
