The commitment to public safety between the Town of Carefree and Rural Metro has never been stronger.
The Town of Carefree and Rural Metro have partnered in fire protection and emergency services for decades, since the founding of Carefree. Rural Metro has always been our first line of defense against fires, medical incidents, auto accidents, and severe weather. That partnership was first based upon subscription service. Then in 2007 the Town and Rural Metro entered in a master contract where the Town assumed financial responsibility and began paying Rural Metro directly for fire protection and emergency services for our residents, businesses, and property owners.
In recent years, because of Carefree and Rural Metro working harder than ever to bind our community and their service together, that relationship has blossomed and has never been as powerful. That bond, which spans firefighters, captains, fire and battalion chiefs, and company ownership, has strengthened and maintained public trust, fostered strong relationships between the Town and our firefighters, and even encouraged a keen sense of shared responsibility.
Carefree firefighters do more than respond to 911 calls. They establish safety awareness programs such as Firewise to improve home safety during wildfires. They provide educational lifesaving sessions such as CPR. They team with the Carefree Water Company to make sure our fire hydrants work. They work with the Foothills Caring Corp to develop evacuation plans for those who age in place. They conduct crash response training at the SkyRanch Airport. They install Lock Boxes, inspect sprinkler systems, install and inspect car seats, remove rattlesnakes, conduct home safety inspections / smoke alarm checks, and serve as the Town Fire Marshal.
By organizing public events, such as Caffeine with a Firefighter or a recent firehouse pancake breakfast, attending HOA meetings or civic events and the farmers market, they have fostered a sense of community. Neighbors mingle at open-house gatherings and tours of the fire station. Kids pick up fire hats and explore fire trucks.
In Carefree, fire management requires a partnership between the Town, our residents, and Rural Metro. Two years ago, Carefree took delivery of a new fire
truck, replacing our worn-out, obsolete, 18-year-old truck. Needed equipment and radios were replaced. To better position ourselves in the advent of desert wildfires, the Town purchased a brush truck.
In March, Carefree and Rural Metro entered a ten-year master contract assuring the continuation of this outstanding relationship. Going forward, Rural Metro and their firefighters know that the Town will be there for them, and our residents know that our Rural Metro firefighters will be there for us. Rural Metro can plan their business and count on the support of Carefree well into the next decade. In turn, Carefree can plan the costs associated with fire and emergency services and know that we have a first-rate partner in our Rural Metro firefighters.
This is how it should work in a small town where neighbors are like family.
The shared commitment to public safety will serve Carefree and Rural Metro well long into our future.
Sincerely,
Mayor John Crane

Tentative FY 26-27 Budget Draft & Bottom Line Up For Approval
The Town of Carefree’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026–2027 Tentative Budget outlines a balanced and conservative financial plan of approximately $12.1 million, developed through a transparent process that included two publicly noticed budget workshops. These sessions provided in-depth discussion on operations, financial conditions, and future priorities, with recordings available on the Town’s website. Aligned with the Town Council’s Strategic Plan, the budget prioritizes public safety, infrastructure improvements, and long-term financial stability while maintaining strong contingency reserves and a pay-as-you-go approach with no long-term debt.
The tentative budget—establishing the Town’s maximum allowable expenditure (“bottom line”) for the fiscal year—will be considered for approval at the next Town Council meeting on May 5 at 5 p.m. This includes approval of Resolution 2026-08, which would adopt the tentative budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027, and call for a public hearing to be held on June 2, 2026 as part of the final adoption process. | | | Carefree Takes Creative Approach to Stormwater Pollution Awareness | | |
Carefree recently introduced its first painted storm drain in the Carefree Desert Gardens, featuring a community-selected Gila monster design and the message “Do Not Dump, Drains to Wash.”
Inspired by a simple idea to bring more awareness to stormwater pollution, the project invited residents to vote on the design and brought the winning concept to life during the Town’s Earth Day Celebration.
It’s a small but meaningful reminder that everything flowing through our streets ends up in our washes. Stay tuned—a full press release with more details on how this initiative came together and how to get involved is coming soon.

Business Highlight:
Pizzicata
| | |
Experience a true taste of Italy at Pizzicata Ristorante Pizzeria, a standout dining destination in Carefree built on passion, tradition, and community. Founded by Italian natives Federico Venturini and Viola Tagliaferri, alongside longtime Arizona restaurateur Phil Igneri, Pizzicata brings authentic family recipes and a heartfelt approach to hospitality to the desert. After relocating from Umbria, Italy in 2018, the owners opened Pizzicata in Carefree in 2019 with a simple vision: to create more than just a restaurant—they created a space where every guest feels at home from the moment they walk in.
At the heart of the menu is pinsa—a light, airy, Roman-style pizza with a crispy crust that sets Pizzicata apart. As Arizona’s first certified “authentic pinseria,” Pizzicata is part of a small, elite group preserving this ancient culinary tradition. Made from a unique blend of wheat, rice, and soy flours and fermented over 72 hours, pinsa is not only flavorful but also more digestible, with less fat, sugar, and cholesterol than traditional pizza. Each dish reflects a balance of authenticity and creativity, delivering a truly elevated dining experience.
Beyond pinsa, the menu features a full lineup of Italian favorites—from house-made pastas like lasagna and carbonara to thoughtfully crafted entrées, all made with high-quality ingredients and time-honored techniques. Inside, guests are welcomed by warm Italian décor, live music, and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, while the sunny patio in Carefree’s Spanish Village offers the perfect setting to dine al fresco.
More than just a place to eat, Pizzicata is a place to gather, connect, and savor the flavors of Italy. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, it’s a must-visit destination that perfectly blends Old World tradition with Carefree charm—truly a little slice of Italy in the Sonoran Desert.
