Dear Cienega Families:

This week marks the end of our 10th year!  On July 22 we will be up and running again with some changes. We are expecting just less than 2000 for the upcoming school year. Several teachers will be relocating out of state with their families. Ms. Dickson, Assistant Principal will also be moving out of state. Ms. Vroegh, Assistant Principal of the Freshman Academy will be the new principal of Rio Rico High School, which is just north of Nogales. Linda Kelly, front office clerk will be leaving Vail after 30+ years with the Vail School District. The dynamics of Cienega will change somewhat but new teachers and staff will continue to provide a quality high school for your students. We wish the staff that has been part of our Cienega family well as they start a new chapter in their lives.

Mr. Geoff Parks was selected as the Assistant Principal for the Freshman Academy and Mr. Kelly Hadden for the 500 house. I welcome them to the administrative team. Cienega High School has been a significant part of the Vail community for the past decade. As I reflect over the past 10 years, many traditions have been established including State Champions, athletic records set, additional Advanced Placement courses offered each year, the A+ school recognition by the Arizona Educational Foundation, the Arizona Department of Education Excelling label for multiple years, millions of dollars awarded in scholarships for our seniors, and many more accolades.

Cienega is successful because of the parent and community support. It is an honor and privilege to serve our students, families, and community.  Have a safe, fun, and restful summer.

Respectfully,

Tricia Pea, Principal

AC3 COMPETES AT THE PIMA COUNTY FAIR!

AC3 PIMA 1

The student built Destruction Derby car got knocked out of the Pima County Fair wreck-fest, just after the mid-point of the springtime spectacle.  Students used their standard "Tucson rules" Derby car for the contest, and it proved to be a little vulnerable to the "beefed-up" cars that came down from Phoenix.  Next year, students plan to have a special Derby car, built according to Phoenix rules, just for the Pima County Fair, for a chance at the $1,000.00 first price money and trophy.  The next Tucson rules race will be in July, on Friday July 15 and Saturday July 16, at the Rodeo grounds.  The AC3 Club students have proved to be very competitive in the Rodeo grounds Tournament of Destruction, that features derby trucks, derby cars, and Monster Trucks.  Currently, AC3 students are busy building both a derby car and truck for that weekend.  Students are very thankful for the great support from the Vail community, and are still accepting donations of cars, tools and cash for the various AC3 projects.

CHS REPRESENTS AT STATE TRACK MEET

Edgar Poe certainly made the meet exciting.......

Edgar took the lead on his last jump of the long jump competition. He jumped 22-3 (NEW SCHOOL RECORD)

only to see two other boys jump a little father. He was a strong 3rd place.

And then came the 110 hurdles....His race (which tied his PR and School record) and dive across the line were certainly championship quality. He came across at the same time as his CDO counterpart. He was 2nd by 3 100ths of a second (.03)

Ashley Groves defended her 2010 State Title in the Pole Vault

with another great performance under pressure. A STATE CHAMPION in every sense of the word. Back to Back State Champion.

(You can see 2 pics of Ashley and Edgar in the online AZ Star article attached. Look in related galleries) Each had a pic in the paper and that was cool to see.

Brianna Rodriquez was the 2011 STATE CHAMPION in the Long Jump with a dominating performance that didn't see another competitor within a foot of her. She jumped 18-9

Before last year we had yet to have a single state champion....

and now we have 3 State Championship performances.

Other notable performances........

Isaac Jones placed 7th in a stacked 100m field. And after along meet Edgar gutted out a 5th place in the triple jump.

Our Girls 4x8 (Nikki Regalado, Robyn Tolin, Vicki Tozer and Chantel Coon) placed an amazing 8th place.

Girls 4x4 (Chantel Coon, Katie Sprunt, Ashley Groves and Brianna Rodriquez) finished off the meet in style. They ran 4:09.46........6 seconds faster than the previous school record......They finished in 11th place.

Everyone associate with our school and program should be proud at how well our athletes represented themselves, our school and their family.

IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE A BOBCAT!!!!!
