protection and revitalization of the Dan River. The announcement was one of several gifts announced by Duke from their Water Resources Fund. The Rockingham County Community Foundation will also receive a second round of funding.
The RiverBank Fund is a special initiative to celebrate and revitalize the Dan and to offer the long-term care and appreciation the River deserves. Long-term support is still being sought from residents and businesses from Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenburg counties (VA) and Stokes, Caswell, Rockingham counties (NC), as well as the City of Danville and beyond, who want the Dan River and its tributaries to thrive. Donations may be made online at www.riverbankfund.org.
The Morotock Arts & Cultural Endowment Fund was established in 1998.
The fund promotes arts and culture in our region. Applications are accepted once a year and reviewed by a small local committee. Past recipients include choral and symphonic organizations as well as museums and theaters, among others.
Donations can be made to this fund at any time and they can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one.
The Claudia Vernon Smith Fund recently awarded a grant of $925 to Gunn Memorial Library in Yanceyville, NC. The grant will support the library's Olympic-themed summer reading program.
Friends and family members of Claudia Vernon Smith established a fund in her name in 2003 with The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. The fund was established to benefit Caswell County non-profit organizations with programs to help educate the county's youth. Some particular area of interests are reading and writing programs for youth.
Smith died March 14, 2003, after a long and courageous battle against cancer. She was a strong community supporter, having served as editor of the Caswell Messenger, director of the Caswell Chamber of Commerce and director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Danville.
Other people are also encouraged to support Caswell County youth through donations to the Claudia Vernon Smith fund by sending a donation designated for the Fund to The Community Foundation.
