Kris Kern and Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller accepting the award.

Heritage Conservancy has been honored with the 2024 Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for its nature preserve species surveys and educational programs at its Croydon Woods Nature Preserve. The reclaimed Superfund site has become a neighborhood jewel, with trails used by community members and students.

The award specifically recognizes community science, education, and biodiversity surveys in this Lower Bucks County nature preserve that connect neighbors and students to vital local nature and biodiversity.

Reasons to Embrace Rainy Days

Every flowering plant you hope to encounter needs water to grow, as do the birds, bees, and butterflies that rely on those plants.

Sure, most people prefer to stay indoors when rainy days arrive. Precipitation often brings about uncomfortable conditions, making everything feel cold and damp. However, rainy days present some of the best opportunities for exploration.

While this perspective may require an interest in particular types of organisms and scenarios, if you’re curious about the obscure forms of life and seeking peace and quiet, rainy days might hold something special for you.

Barndt Yellow Farm Added to Our Register of Historic Places

Patty Barndt-Slater and Brian Long (left) and the Barndt Yellow Barn Farm (right).

The Barndt Yellow Barn Farm has been a working farm since its establishment in the early 19th century. The family raised cattle, pigs, chickens, and crops. A number of agricultural buildings remain, including a milk house, hen coops, a pig pen, and a main corn crib. Many original features of the well-preserved butcher shop are still intact.

"They sold items to the surrounding community," says Patty Barndt-Slater. It was run by multiple members of the family. "They sold beef and pork, eggs, and many vegetables like beets, beans, tomatoes, and potatoes."

Today, the farm is preserved under the Montgomery County Agricultural Land Preservation Program. Heritage Conservancy is thrilled to add the Barndt Yellow Barn Farm to our Register of Historic Places!

Heritage Conservancy Hosts Annual Spring Carnival

Guests learned about native plants and local nature and enjoyed hikes in Croydon Woods.

There’s no better way to welcome the season than with Heritage Conservancy’s Spring Carnival. The annual event brings environmental and community organizations together at Croydon Woods in Lower Bucks County, along with games, guided hikes, prizes, live music, and good food. This year featured food trucks, a fire engine, live violin music, and a LEGO® building table that was popular with young guests. Students from Harry S. Truman High School held a native plant sale, and Silver Lake Nature Center hosted a table.

Over 200 people attended the carnival. Many guests were from the Croydon neighborhood, and several staff, students, and families from nearby Keystone Elementary joined the fun.

Testimonial

"The Fred Beans Automotive Group proudly supports Heritage Conservancy’s efforts to preserve and protect our natural and historic heritage. We have helped with the purchase of a new truck to assist with tree plantings, cleanups, and other projects on protected properties, and we have contributed funds through our annual participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

This annual support prioritizes the use of funding for education so future generations help carry on the mission of the Conservancy.

We know this type of outreach is critically important to ensure our community members value all our areas to offer and understand how to become stewards

themselves of our environment.”
