Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

For several years, Kane was a familiar face around Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society as he patiently waited for the right family to come along. While many people loved him, finding the perfect fit took time. Through it all, Kane remained hopeful, winning hearts with his personality and resilience.

We are thrilled to share that Kane was adopted in May and is now living his very best life with a family who adores him! His adopters report that he is settling in wonderfully and thriving in his new home. Hearing how well he is doing reminds us that every pet deserves a chance and that sometimes the best matches are simply worth waiting for.

Congratulations, Kane! Your GMHS family couldn't be happier for you, and we're so grateful your forever family finally found you.

May Adoptions

During May, Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society celebrated 78 adoptions and 25 transfers to adoption-guaranteed partner organizations, helping a total of 103 pets take the next step toward loving homes and brighter futures. Each one represents not only a fresh start for a deserving animal, but also space for us to help the next pet in need. We are grateful to our adopters, foster families, rescue partners, volunteers, and supporters who make these happy endings possible! Together, we continue to improve and save lives, one adoption at a time.

Vine Travel and Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society have partnered to launch Travel with Purpose, a new initiative that combines unforgettable travel experiences with support for local nonprofit organizations.

The program’s first featured trip is a luxury Tulip Time river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium aboard AmaWaterways in April 2027. A portion of proceeds from the trip will benefit Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society and its mission to improve and save the lives of companion animals through compassionate care, affordable adoption, spay/neuter services, education, and community engagement.

Created by Vine Travel owner Pam Rowe, Travel with Purpose is designed to bring people together through shared travel experiences while supporting meaningful causes. Future trips may include wine cruises, music-themed cruises, and European Christmas Market river cruises.

Thank you to Lockwood's Carpets for donating carpet squares to support Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society's educational programs. The donation will be used in Pet Story Time, Rescue Readers, Pawsitive Impact Club, and youth camps, helping create comfortable spaces where children and animals can learn and connect. A huge thank you to the Valls family for creating and donating enrichment items for our cats! These thoughtful creations help keep the cats in our care happy, active, and engaged while they wait for their forever homes. We are so grateful for your kindness, creativity, and support for the animals at GMHS!

Our hearts are full after spending time with these amazing second grade students from Ware Academy! Not only did they collect donations for the animals in our care, but they also became advocates for adoptable pets by sharing their stories and helping give them a voice. We loved welcoming them to GMHS to meet animals, make treats, and learn more about animal welfare in our community. Thank you for your kindness, compassion, and support! You are making a difference for homeless pets!

Kitten season is in full swing, and the need has never been greater. As of today, GMHS is caring for 170 kittens in our shelter and foster homes! From formula and food to vaccinations, medical care, and supplies, every kitten requires significant resources before they are ready for adoption. Your support helps ensure these vulnerable animals receive the care they need to grow healthy, strong, and ready for loving homes. Shelter Pet Spotlight - Oreo

Oreo is a gentle, soft-hearted girl who just needs a little time to show her true self. She can be a bit shy when first meeting new people, but underneath that quiet exterior is a very sweet and loving companion. Once she feels safe, Oreo enjoys affection and forms a strong, meaningful bond with her person. She has lived peacefully with another cat! Oreo is looking for a foster to adopt or foster situation for medical reasons the shelter would be happy to go over. 

Oreo would do best in a calm, quiet household without young children or toddlers, where she can settle in at her own pace. Her experience with dogs is unknown. With patience and a gentle approach, Oreo will reward you with her trust and quiet companionship. If you’re looking for a kind, gentle cat to share a peaceful home, Oreo may be the perfect fit!
