Old Honey Farm Inn Comes Down to Make Way for Encompass Snoqualmie
|

The Honey Farm building in the process of being torn down in late April
|
|
Encompass is growing!
We are currently in the silent phase of "It Starts Here," a capital campaign to build a new Encompass facility in Snoqualmie. With the demolition of the Old Honey Farm Inn in late April, our plans for Encompass Snoqualmie are starting to become reality!
Encompass purchased the land containing the Old Honey Farm Inn structure in November 2017. The Inn, built in 1989, was badly damaged in 2005 by a fire that shuttered its doors permanently. Since then, the building has sat unoccupied. With spaces overflowing and waiting lists growing, Encompass leadership made the decision last year to kick off a capital campaign for a new building, and the Honey Farm property provided an ideal location.

The new Encompass facility will be a state-of-the-art pediatric therapy clinic with additional spaces for early learning programs and staff offices. The new facility will complement, rather than replace, the Early Learning Center on Boalch Avenue in North Bend. The campaign includes a plan for much-needed renovations to the Early Learning Center to accommodate more students and the growing needs of early learning staff and parents.
Of the new Encompass Snoqualmie facility, Encompass Executive Director Nela Cumming said,
“We [will] have a building that’s designed around kids with special needs, has the equipment we need for children in occupational therapy, sensitive to noise and light, trauma informed design … We want that for our Valley, for our community, we want kids to get that level of quality because they deserve it.”

The event kicked off with Master of Ceremonies

Mike Flood, Vice President of Community Outreach for the Seattle Seahawks, introduced Keynote Speaker
Ray Roberts, a former Seattle Seahawk who now works with Special Olympics International. Family speaker
Jonathan Clark shared his story about how Encompass has helped his family navigate the unexpected journey of Gus, his daughter, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Encompass was honored to have several local civic leaders and guests of honor in the audience from city, county, and state government, Snoqualmie Tribe, and Snoqualmie Valley and Issaquah School Boards.

Encompass Mobile Therapy Unit Featured on "Take 5"
|
One of the perks of having Chris Cashman as our Rise & Thrive MC is that he can get us on television! Chris and his colleagues at KING 5 have just launched a new show called
Take 5, where they have "a casual conversation about the news, with storytelling centered around people, places and ideas that leave you feeling something positive."
Following the Rise & Thrive Breakfast on April 24th, Chris stayed behind to chat with our Behavioral Health Supervisor Kat Kaiser and get an inside look at our Mobile Therapy Unit, which he shared on
Take 5 that night.
If you missed the show the first time around, you can still view the segment about the Encompass Mobile Therapy Unit on Youtube at the link below!

Toy Trucks Come to Life for Encompass Preschoolers

Many young children enjoy playing with trucks, so it's always a treat for our preschoolers to see life-size versions of their toys!

To help the students learn about signs,
Maverick Excavation
came out with their big equipment and showed the kids how the dump truck moves up and down.

Ms. Nikki's class visited a fire station and got to see and touch the equipment that the firefighters use in their jobs.

Coeur Mining Makes a Big Difference During their Short Stay in the Area
|
Encompass Director of Development Lisa Yamasaki and Executive Director Nela Cumming (front, left) accept donations from Coeur Mining employees.
|
On April 19th, we had a surprise of the best kind: a group of people from Coeur Mining that were in town for a team-building retreat were given the following challenge: "Go out and make as big of an impact as you can by 5:00 pm today."
So that's exactly what they did! They showed up at our Early Learning Center, completely unannounced, and offered up their time and resources to help out Encompass in any way they could. They went out into the community and came back bearing donations from a number of local businesses for us to use in our Autumn Gala, including two mountain bikes that they had built themselves earlier in the week.
They also bought much-needed supplies for our preschool and summer camps, including sports equipment, bubbles, chalk, and more.
We were blown away by the generosity of these Coeur employees toward an organization that they had just learned about and that is not even in the communities where they live (they were from all over the country: South Dakota, Nevada, Alaska). Thank you so much to Coeur for making an impact on children and families in the Snoqualmie Valley while you are here!

Encompass Parent-Child Home Program Featured at Local, National Conferences
|
|
Every year, there are two professional development conferences for agencies throughout our area that offer Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP). Encompass PCHP Manager Lynne Creed is heavily involved in planning and facilitating these trainings. This year, Lynne facilitated a self-care workshop titled "Inquire, Inspire, and Indulge," where participants had time to make several fun self-care-themed crafts while building relationships with people from other PCHP agencies.
|
|
Lynne also represented Encompass PCHP at the National PCHP Conference in New York, presenting a session called "Making Books Come Alive"
(below, left). Lynne was part of a contingent of PCHP staff members representing the state of Washington at the national conference

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month
|
|
Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of speech-language pathologists in providing life-altering treatment.
According to a survey of 1,121 audiologists and speech-language pathologists, the number one barrier to early identification of communication disorders is parents' lack of awareness about the warning signs.
Visit the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)'s website for tools to help you identify various communication disorders in children and adults, like this one:

Thanks to you, we nearly DOUBLED our GiveBIG goal
|
|
We went into this year's GiveBIG with a target amount in mind: $2,500. We knew that if we raised that amount, we would get another $2,500 in matching funds from Red Nose Day. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise $4,782, or 191% of our goal. With the matching funds from Red Nose Day, that gave us
a grand total of $7,282 for children and families. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped us spread the word!
