April Connect Hosted By: Nelson County Schools- Area Technology Center
On April 19th, the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber held its second morning Connect of the year hosted at the Nelson County Area Technology Center. Both community & business members gathered for networking and to hear from some of the ATC’s team members on the multiple programs the center offers and upcoming plans for their new UP Center. For those of you that do not know, ATC works with employer partners and educators from across the region to develop innovative programs, dual- credit opportunities and professional-based experiences for their students. They work to help students discover and showcase their gifts and prepare them to enter the workforce with the skills needed for success. Skill based programs include automotive, carpentry, electrical, IT, welding, aerospace, and health science. These programs are VITAL for the success of both the students and businesses that have teamed up together with the overall goal of a thriving community.

For more information on the Area of Technology Center you can visit their website at https://atc.nelson.kyschools.us/welcome or call them at 502-348-9096 to schedule a visit.
National Civics Bee
On April 22nd, the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber held its first ever National Civics Bee at Thomas Nelson High School. 17 middle school students from across the county gathered to test their civics knowledge to win the top prize of $500 dollars and for the chance to compete in the statewide competition held later this year at the Kentucky State Fair. The students competed in two rounds of questioning, the top five with the most points advancing into round three. Talon Merta, Zackery Nalley, Elizabeth Hatton, Myah Collie, and Josie Hite were the top five finalists. The top five finalists gave a brief presentation on their essay topic with the judges, and Myah impressed the judges the most with her topic on “lack of recreation for teens her age in Nelson County” winning her first place in the competition. In addition to Collie’s win, Hatton took home second place and $250 dollars, and Hite was awarded third place taking home the prize of $150 dollars. On behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber congratulations and a job well done!

We want to acknowledge the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation for sponsoring this event and trusting us to help pilot this program. We want to thank the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for their support and encouragement, and we look forward to sending these 3 amazing individuals to the State Event.

We would also like to thank our elected officials, Senator Jimmy Higdon, State Representative Candy Massaroni, Nelson County Judge-Executive Tim Hutchins, and Mayor Dick Heaton for their support. Also, thank you to our local sponsors: Abound Credit Union, Lincoln National Bank, Town & Country Bank and Trust Co., Wilson & Muir Bank & Trust Co., 150 Quick Stop, GBA Office Solutions, and Eric Hayden Collision and Towing and Perfect Dent Repair.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson High School, Mr. Brooks and Mr. Bunch for the incredible hospitality. And we want to lastly thank our committee and volunteers that have been a tremendous help, thank you!

Why is Civics such an importance for students? In civics, you learn to contribute to public processes and discussions of real issues. Without knowing the Fundamentals of Government, Ownership as Citizens, Proactive and Knowledgeable Voting, and Limitations of Government just to name a few. A democratic society relies on its people to fulfill their duties as citizens. When they are given a proper civics education, people know what is expected of them and to what limitations the government is bound. It is important to consider some of the key reasons why this subject benefits students who are about to become participating members of society.
